I live in part of Gods country in South Western Montana I can drive ten minutes out of town and be into heavy hills, some call them mountains.... I can hike some where between 25-35 miles in a day depending on the terrain, and live for extended trips into these mountains with very little to almost nothing. I am working on the nothing part, but that takes time and practice. I am a wild land fire fighter by trade (new trade started a few years ago), before that I was into killing trees by the thousands. I have about a quarter million to my name now, along with some real monsters... One being 9 foot across and filled 4 log trucks up. I was in the Navy some 20 plus years ago, been married for about 18 and still so. I have been walking the Olympics, Cascades and Rockies for many years now. Not as much as I would like, but working on catching up now. I lived in W. Washington for most of my life, but the hunting sucked in a big way, so came back to my birthstate to make a new go of it. I will leave off to let every one know that when I am on my trips, one of the things I tell people is that bugs arn't off the menu....

You are very welcomemy man! This thread loloks terrific Russ. I was thinking. What would you think of doing a survival scenario group exercise on line? We could invite folk to participate and run the parameters of the scenario and see what is what with the group decisions. Maybe sometime in a month orso after the guys and gals have got a feel for this kind ofthing. We might even consider inviting folk from other sites to participate or even do several groups on different sites in a loose competition.

That may be kinda fun... I will start a little later tonight putting more topics up so that they can be read thru.... Boy's and girls, start doing your home work... I think we should do our own thing first, get a good feel for it, and them go at it with some basic knowledge throughout the whole group...

Howdy, Elkchsr! Do I remember you from Moosie's board? I've been thru your town on several occasions when I used to live in Corvallis, in the Bitterroot Valley. We'd take off and go over Skalkaho Pass and fish at Georgetown Lake or when heading east towards Butte. Even went to some softball tournaments in Anaconda.

I left the Bitterroot in 1996. I'm in Auburn, Ca. now. West of Reno on I-80. I get back there every few years. I have a brother and a sister living in Hamilton, along with assorted nieces and nephews. Actually, we may go back this summer. If so I'll let ya know!

I'm going to do a little update... Since I was last here, I moved to back to Washington state to run an 82 million sq' facility During my stay, I took a number of boating trips down some of the major rivers, fishing and hunting along the way, made some trips into the Cascades and Olympic mountains Then moved to Las Vegas as a Genereal Superintendant, running a number of crews around the city and state I was able to do a few foray's into the Majove desert... That was fun, a new experience sleeping on the ground and really becoming dehydrated a few times... Now I'm back in Anaconda MT chasing elk, the last two summers I was an engine boss on wild land fires... This summer I got to go to California to help make more... er... I mean put out fires... that was real fun, we burned out about 100 square miles while was there... Now I'm working on getting in a hard rock mine by Billings Mt... I've taken a number of -20 excursions into the mountains with no more than a day pack, not tent or sleeping bag Other than that, it's been the same old living and normal as every one goes... Russ...

I have friends on all the reservations in Montana and a number off... I met and befriended some very good people this summer from Southern Cheyenne (Black Kettle), Navajo Scouts, Apache and Hopi... The spirits have been trying to tell me what my Spirit Animal is since 2001 With a number of hints, including seeing it twice, creating a medicine bag for myself with the animals track as a main representation, the way I look at the world and teach, even my screen name is a tell tail hint... But that’s for another story... I'm looking at property over in Whitehall; my first Montana elk was up in Bone Basin Maybe we can catch up one of these days and have a chatter... Russ...

I'm open to all ways as that is the way of Mother Earth... Ho! Hello Lafe and Elk Chaser. It's wonderful to hear about you guys getting together, especially given your shared paths. I was raised in eastern North Dakota and danced with the Earth from a very early age. I was honored to meet up with the spiritual guide with the Spirit Lake Lakota many many years ago. He and his family influenced my life greatly, as have other guides over the years. The bones of the Turtle Lodge still stand across the pond here, the fire ring remains as well. It's been a few years since I've hosted an Inipi here but the space is still hallowed and perhaps one day it will be time again. The Lodge Pole pine tipi poles from Montana are now aging gracefully, about 24 yrs old, in my garden as a trellis over the circle below. The Grandmother Lodge was retired with honor as the cover was no longer able to be mended. I treasure the memories of life in the tipi but have found the current dome more conducive to the rainy climate of southeastern Ohio. One of the things that has stayed with me my entire life is image of the Sacred Circle, some call it a Medicine Wheel and it can also be a good image for a Counsel Circle. Folks are positioned in a circle around a central object, like a sculpture or in this case a controversial topic like abortion. Everyone thinks they have the correct understanding of the central object because it is indeed what they are seeing and experiencing from their point of view. Some folks truly believe what they are seeing is the absolute truth, even to the point of arguing with someone who is situated on the other side of the circle. But in reality, all the various views are correct and by partaking in respectful dialogue we can come to understand each other better while also getting a better picture of the whole. I'm still catching up with everyone's contributions, it feels good so far and it appears as though we may be nearing the completion of this particular round. Care to join us in the circle and share with us your views?

Somehow I lost the bit in my previous post about the Broadwell Hill Campfire Chat over in the Main Street category BTW, I'm eager for more survival tips and am most certainly up for some survival scenarios and all the rest! Right up my alley
