I have a couple in the 170-pound range that I use regularly, and nobody around me seems to even notice, or if they do, they never say anything. Judging by your picture, I'd say they are just scared of you out there banging away with showers of sparks flying all over the place. ;D

Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.
Seriously, for small bits like you want, there's no appreciable noise, there's no "shower of sparks", it's as calm an activity as grilling up a steak.
Which reminds me, I gotta make some branding irons for my steaks. After I get over this smelting bug I have right now - making yer own steel is a special thing.

At the Kennessaw event last weekend, i saw a smith working from a travelling forge. I've had my heart on one of those for a long time anyway, and after studying it up close I am in love. He built it himself from the old plans. I'm looking for a set of plans now myself. Except for the wheels, it appears to be something I could make.

If you're serious, come on over to Bristol next weekend. I'll send you the address if you like, it's off Deerfield drive, I think, SE corner of town. There will be all sorts of stuff going on just to oogle at, or buy, if you like. Excellent opportunity for someone looking to get into it. Sunday's free - fri/sat, you gotta pay to play. I'll be there thursday night.

Well, not being one to get started on a small time basis, typical of me, I have acquired a copy of the original plans for the 1850s "travelling forge" and construction will begin shortly. ;D Heck, even if I don't blacksmith much, I'll have a cool forge!

Where exactly Christopher? If I can make it and camp out and the Marietta thing the weekend prior doesn't kill me, I'll be there. That way all I need do is buy more grub and find a camp site. I won't even unpack if the folk don't mind a Confederate amongst them! ;D

Ron "Bowie" Claiborne of the Appalachian Knifemakers Association, will be holding his annual hammer-in in Knoxville Tn (off Ellistown Rd.) on the last weekend of September. Admission is free, but there will be an Iron In The Hat, where participants typically bring an item for donation, and tickets for the raffle are sold at $1 apiece. Proceeds go to cover Ron's costs and reimburse key demonstrators. The primary theme will be hand-forging a knife from start to finish, including heat treat, along with a sheathmaking demo by legendary leatherworker Sandy Morrissey. There will be two cutting competitions, "regular", and "kitchen", the latter run by knifemaker, chef, and author Ethan Becker. For anyone interested in the art and science of cutlery, this gathering is a must-do. There is ample camping acerage adjacent the event, and hotels in the 10-mile range are available. The online discussion amongst knifemakers for this event are found here: www.knifenetwork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37059

Don't have a coffee pot! I do have a grease board though over the dining table. Still don't work! I have a mind like a steel trap! Rusted, pitted and stuck in the mud.

Go to the top of the page and look under the OCC logo and to the center of the page. See the "Calendar" icon? Click it and then click September. That's the best I can do for right now. All of you staff members have been enabled to post entries on the calendar. Please feel free to do so and I'll see if it can learn to take UBS code or interactive stuff. ;D That is unles I have a volunteer who wishes to be in charge of the calendar. Any volunteers?

How about it Mars, Shiloh? Are you guys up for this? I'm penciling it in for sure. Christopher, what kind of donations? Blacksmith things? What usually ends up on the table ranges from tools knifemakers use, to raw materials (good, hard to find steels; exotic woods; horn and antlers), finished knives of high quality, books on the subject, etc. I myself am bringing a 40-pound plate of wrought iron off an old RR bridge, a hard-to-find item these days. That said, I'm sure good outdoor cookware would be welcomed too... cast iron, tripods, firestarters, other "outdoor" stuff like that I think would fare well, and certainly be considered on par.

I'll have to wait and see how finances are. I am so swamped with gunsmithing these days I don't know whether I should take off and go over there. I have to go there to Mosheim 2 weeks later for a re-enactment.
