Well, Paws...when I accidentally ran across those photos, and pulled the one of that balut, I nearly called Europe on the porcelain phone. And like you, I am glad I couldn't smell it. As a kid growing up on a farm where we had chickens...there were accidental baluts from time to time. As a curious kid, I broke one one time...I don't remember ever smelling anything that smelled much worse unless it was a dead human. Ewww! I better go on and hush...already cured my desire for breakfast! -Rogue-

I'ld savor the whiff of a dead body if anyone ever again cracks one of them things open within 200 yards of me...I lived in Navy Housing in the early 70s had a couple of Pillipino neighbors...not just the gentleman that was in the Navy, but his whole famn damily...Grandpa used to celebrate the dropping of a hat by eating those nasty frigging things...not only eating them but making them in the li'l piece of dirt behind their house...had another neighbor that was Korean...without fail the grandma would produce a big crock of "Kim chee" for every neighborhood function...that stuff aint any too pleasant to stand next to either....

Now I know why the hatcheries are chargeing $3+ for day-old chicks!! Will you guys quit eating all them eggs before they're ready? You're causing a chick shortage.

Just after I met the first MRS Foreman I was visiting her house and having lunch. She served a Gnanka sometimes called a "skunk fruit" or "jack fruit" . She warned me that it smelled really bad (like over ripe Camembert or Limburger cheese actually), and that it was rumored if consumed with alcohol was deadly poisenous. The flavor though was supposedly as sweet as a melon with a bit of a nutlike note. She cut this thing that looked like an overgrown hedge apple in half revealing a chalky white, lymph node like interior with pale seeds in the center. Forewarned about the odor and with a strong memory of Grandma's Saturday afternoon Limburger cheese treats, I managed to hold my breath. I tried a bite and Linda asked how I liked it. I responded that to me it smelled and tasted a bit like kerosene. She tried a bit and got a funny surprised look on her face and then looked up toward the ceiling. Yep, up there hanging above the table was a kerosene lamp that was dripping right onto the fruit!

There is a fella who lives in Houston, a Filipino bitchin' about there not being any Filipino restaurants around. Someone told him it was because Filipino food wasn't any good! LMAO (Truth sometimes is painful!)

Everytime I want to curb my appetite, I think about Filipino food...especially Balut! That cures the munchies better than a seven course meal. Anybody who'd eat one of those foul things would **** * ****! Damn...can't get that stench out of my nostrils everytime I think about it.

As for that feller in houston, he may not be able to find many Phillipino restaurants in Texas, but I can damn sure point him in the direction of a spot where he can find a whole passle of them; back in the Phillipines! ;D ;D ;D

"Oh Oh, ziggy naw Dong!" Awww, there were enough traditional dishes that the food was worthy of attention. Thing is that the PI was invaded so many times that their food is very eclectic including Jpanese, Chinese, Spanish, and a lot of Italian, German, and Polish, and Greek, and English and French, and so on because of the American GI in WWII and later. Like most countries if you travel to different regions the food changes in character and composition and reflects the coloquial history. Now there is een a distinct cultural change based on our own USA regions! You can find Southern Fried chicken right along with PI style fried chicken and a KFC on the same block in Angeles City. They now have all of our BBQ variations plus their own original styles plus Spanish, Mexican, French, Italian and German! If anything, the food there is no less than plentiful and their cooks can do any style you can imagine.

There was a time in the late 60's that I ate some stuff just to keep alive.....Bugs,grubs, worms, snakes and such. But I would have ate dirt before eating anything even close to a pre-hatch bird. Who in the hell was the first person to try this delicacy???Must of been a blind man thinking he was hard boiling some eggs.I've seen Benoit eaten, and it was disgusting. However,to each his own. snake-eyes
