yes..i put a do in the oven. for 4 hours, then let it cool, then i put my wire wheel on my 4 1/2" grinder. cleaned all the rust off, being very careful not to damage it. it looked brand new then i greased it with crisco lard..lightly..top,bottom,inside,outside da ho thang...then back in the oven on broil for 2 hours it is beautiful...its all black...now...i took pictures.and i will get them put to disc, so i can show ya'll at the same time..we have a old 8" skillet, that had crud, on the out side..knocked off all the crud with a wire wheel if'in you try this method--wear goggles..preferably full face shield and leather gloves..never..never ever..never ever ever pick up a grinder, without leather gloves. that dude will eat you up....then burp Shop skills are a help! I don't recommend mechanical refurbishing beyond maybe sand blasting due to the inherent hazzards of injury and damage potential to the iron. So kids, for the record; "This man is a professional. Don't try this at home!"

Thanks for the tips here fellas. I have inherited two fine pans from my mother and they are in dire need of cleaning. They haven't been used in a few years. I remember her cooking with these pans when I was just a little dude. One is a Wagner and the other, a 12 Griswold. That Griswold could sure make good cornbread. These pans were originally my grandmothers, so they are quite old. Needless to say I want to take the sure route so as not to damage them. I'm going to try the oven cleaner first and see how it goes. Unless, of course, one of you guys with one of those electro gismo's want to take it on. ;D Postage not a problem. Thanks again all.

No, but I'm getting close now. All my iron needs reworked and I do not have the time to deal with it. Would be the better option for me I think.
