Aint been much activity on this section in a while..going to be getting some new DO's in the next couple of days..I hope...be able to show the folks we are teaching how to season one on Sat if all goes to plan...there is a place over in Portland, CT that as them rather cheap..they aint the best in the world but the function just fine...and for the price they are hard to beat...got to get some sleep now so I can be out of here by 1Pm to make it there and then on to work...also I'm looking for some shallow DOs for baking pies and cakes...can't spend any real money right now as I'm so broke I can;t afford to pay attention...but if ya'll got any spots/sites that will sell cheap let me know...

Hey TT when you get a feel for the prices maybe I can get a web site or snail mail address from you. I could use a couple shallow 10s to 14s for biscuits, pies, upside down cakes, etc. Don't say anything to SMiracle, I'll bet he uses the full sized tall ovens. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) ;D

I'm looking at getting a 16 or 20 inch skillet with a flat lid for baking. This is the one with the handle on each side instead of the single long handle. Then I'd have a local blacksmith make me a bail for it so it's easier to pick up.
What's you all's take on this idea. Is this a good idea or would I be better off with a couple of smaller ones. The only thing I'm worried about is that 2 to 2 1/2 inches deep won't be deep enough for light bisquits.

Skillet? Flat lid? 16 to 20 inch? Let me see I think three dozen biscuits will fit in a 14 inch oven. Three full sized loaves of bread can be baked in a 14 inch oven at one time. What the heck you plan to bake in it? It would be great for pizza, maybe cobbler depending on how deep it is. If it had no legs though it could be a pain. Also it needs to have a rim around the lid for use with coals. Seems to me that Griswold made large commercial handleless skillets with a bail for hotel use.

Well, my biscuit cutter is the case to a Big Ben alarm clock. I usually make 2 doz. biscuits or 4 loaves of bread for the family at a time. 2 doz = 2 meals, 4 loaves = 2 days. Glad you mentioned about it needing legs. Useful info there! Didn't think about that for outdoor baking.
In fact, the one I'm looking at was used in food service! The school has it. The bail was taken off and lost many years ago. I don't think the lid is original, but it fits nicely. They don't like it because it's hadleless, but I always liked using it.

Cast Iron welding rods are available now so you might have legs welded on to it. Just make sure they are triangled or a set of three and welded to near the outside of the thing. I know that makes a tripping hazzard, but it sure makes it a lot more stable. For a temperature of 350 degrees on a 20 incher you will need 40 coals with 18 of them in a concentric circle pattern on the bottom and 22 of them on the top in a circle with about 8 of them in a equally spaced square around the loop handle of the lid. That will give you a heat of 325 to 375 degrees for up to about two hours which should do well for all the bread or pie you'll want.

Well, I just asked my boss man to stop by the kitchen tomorrow and pick up the skillet. That's when he informed me, in his best Archie Bunker voice, "Geeze, Faith. You don't need one that big!" I told him he didn't know how much I cook at a time for the family. Well, that got the snowball rolling! Seems he thinks I cook too much at a time and always have. Nice to know after 16 years together. If I cook too much, then where's all the wasted food??? You mean I don't have to work so hard to keep him satisfied?? Wow! I like easy pleasers! So why then, did he buy me a 40-qt stock pot for my birthday? Hey! At least he said something other than "g' morn' ", "here da mail" or "y'comin' t'bed?" :DLOL OK - So that's two men's opinions that I really don't need this particular jobber. Guess it's settled then. And I wanted it so. I'll get over it, I'm sure.

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"..if ya want it get it...if ya don't, can I have it? ? ;D ;D they make rings with legs on them for just such pans so ya can use them in or outdoors...legs is a pain in the butt in the oven...and ifn I remember right them big ol' skillet/fry pans had a good size fire ring on the bottom...If ya can't find one you can have the smitty make ya one for it...

Oh yeah, you would be better off to have a stand made Faith. Run it big enough to get the legs almost all the way out to the edge and have them I guess no more than about five inches tall. Use the tripod design (like a milk stool!) Now let me see. If the area of a circle equals Pi times the Radius squared then : A two inch biscuit is 3.14 square inches, a three inch biscuit is 7.07 sq inches, a 14 inch skillet is 153.86 square inches, a sixteen inch skillet is 200.96 square inches, and a 20 inch skillet is 314 square inches. That means in a 14 inch skillet you can bake 48 two inch biscuits, or 21 three inch biscuits, and in a 20 inch skillet you could bake 100 2 inch biscuits or 44 three inch biscuits. Faith, it would be great for large family cook outs if the boss says it's OK to get it. The forty quart stock pot is absolutely justified because you do stuff like once in a while and freeze up the results! If the skillet is for sale and you guys don't want to get it would you consider getting it for me,at my expense of course? If so, I'll make sure it goes to you in my will and of course it will be available to borrow. ;D

There's a farm sale tomorrow. Just down the road from me, too. I got to looking at the auctioneers website and saw he had pictures posted of everything. I swear that I saw Ol' Mrs. Gramlich's lard kettle on one of the wagons. And I know for certain that there's a ring that goes with it! They'll probably sell separately. If I recall, it would be just the right size for the skillet. I can always set the torch to the legs if they are too long.
Guess I'm gonna handle this the way I do most everything else around here. That is just do it. And if Mike says anything, I can tell him it's part of my antique collection. That usually justifies anything I buy. He considers it my antiquing his retirement account. I'll just remind him of the ugly $25 table I bought when we got married that netted me (us) $3000! ;D

Well I didn't get my new DOs..working this shift has got my days all Snafu'ed didn't remember it was friday untill I was headd to work...have to wait for another day that'll take in that direction...gona check out the Lodge site in the mean time....

Keep an eye on E-bay and the flea markets TT. Danged Lodge has some nice things but if you can't find them on sale you get a better deal buying antiques.

I saw one at the antique mall today that got me curious. There was a 14" Wagner that only had the word Wagner on it. Nothing else, no Sidney -O- or anything. Either of you familiar with this mark?

Well I got confused. I'd looked at several. Had to go back and look again. Nope. It wasn't stylized or loopy. It's more blocky lettering, all caps about 1" high, and placed horizontally just above the center. And I was wrong about it being a 14. At the bottom it says "10".
The 14 was a Piqua(?)

Well my travels carried me to Portland yesterday..and I actually remembered to stop in at the store that has the cast iron...picked up a 12qt, and 8qt and a 4 qt...that 4 qt is a cute li'l rascel...be just the right size for a one pot meal when camping alone or when ya got no more than 2 people eating out of it ;D ;D ;D...plan on doing a small dump cake in it this Sat...yup folks, I'm doing another "Cooking Demo" for the Women in the Outdoors...one of these days I'll have a weekend all to myself..(or maybe with a friend) were I don't have to show/teach or otherwise demonstrate how to cook/hunt/shoot etc....guess I got to figure out how to say that "N" word...spend way to much time volunteering my time away

Paws, do you know if they have any of them 1qt for sale that sounds very interestin...not that I want a commerative pot..but what a conversation piece that would make ;D ;D ;D
