Phil, Here is what I have planned so far. There is a back parking lot where the big busses park. On the north side of that lot is a long narrow grassy area where we will be setting up. On the information sheet (that I can email to you) I suggested bringing pop-up fly's or the like and chairs. As far as cooking, most people have their own set-up. I have a stainless steel table and some of the hog pans too. I will be there early to mark off the area and try to mark off a row of parking too. I already have about a dozen different people/groups signed up, and there is room for more. (hint hint) Also Dave Horton www.dutchovendave.com will be there putting on a DO seminar. He will be inside the store in the"Buggy Barn" - a room off to the side of the west entrance. You will have to see this, it looks just like the inside of a barn - a lady is painting full size Belgian Amish work horses on one of the walls. There are some camping areas not too far away that some of the people will be staying. Scenic Hills in Berlin is one where I know several will be camping. I am really looking forward to this and hope to meet some new friends and eat some good food. I hope this helps some of you decide to come. Thanks

Thanks Matt! Hey guys N gals I had a thought, if you would like to participate but do not have a steel table to cook on Lehman's right this very minute has a supply of extra large (13&1/2"X2&1/2" deep) stainless steel pie pans on sale for ten bucks each. I just bought five to use for mess pans for re-enactments. Anyway, if you take two you can fill one with gravel, kitty litter, soil, or even vermiculite then set the other in and use this as a base for your bottom coals. You can set this on the driveway, grass, or a wooden table without burning the surface.

Hi all, As of today we have 15 sign-ups with a total of about 28 people coming to cook and another 10 sign-ups that will be there to observe and maybe take the DO seminar. Things are coming together and hopefully the weather will be nice to make it a real nice day on an important weekend. It will be neat to see what everyone decides to cook. I am still debating whether or not to have some kind of "competition" - maybe dessert. We'll see. Anybody decide for sure if your coming yet???

Paws, Good to hear your coming. I have you signed-up under the Major Reynolds title. Is it legal to serve northern beans with southern cornbread? I thought for sure you could get strung-up for that! I am looking forward to meeting you and anyone else who wants to join us. Just don't ask me to sing - I'll drive everyone away. Do you know if you are coming up just on Saturday or maybe come Friday afternoon and stay up here Friday night. I can get you some information on campgrounds in the area if you want. Thanks, Matt

Afraid the best we can do is get there Saturday AM and stay the most of the day. I'll be pushing it at that with the animals here if I can't get someone to walk them in the afternoon. I talked to Bruce this morning and caught him in a weak moment. He has a thing in Lancaster Monday in uniform that I let him rope me into in exchange for coming up Saturday. The guitar player is coming in exchange for a ride and company to Chillicothe the week before! My pie/mess pans came today and they are terrific!

Matt if you decide to do a cook off consider "Cast Iron Chef" style and use unknown ingredients distributed to everyone who wishes to participate. You could collect a few bucks from entrants to pay for ingredients and maybe a small trophy of some sort. That 6 inch cast iron Dutch oven with an engraved tag might be nice. Hint hint. For judges grab Lehman's customers at random and give them a judging checklist of some sort.

Hey all, the D.O.G. at Lehman's is only one month away. So far I have been impressed by the number of people signing up. I had no idea what to expect when we first started with this. So far - if everybody shows up - we will have about 50 people attending with close to 25 people cooking. That doesn't include my scout Troop. A fair amount of the kids may be there either to cook up something or attend the seminar. I haven't decided what I am going to cook yet but from the sounds of it there is going to be a lot of good food there. I was at Lehman's today and saw that they are stocking up on a lot of cast iron. They even had about 8 of the new 6" Lodge camp dutch ovens. I hope some more of you can make it on the 24th, it's going to be a great time. Matt

Hey Paws and everyone, Just over a week to go before the first big D.O.G. that Ohio has seen! As of today I am expecting to see 75 people or more turn out for this shindig. There are about 25 people /groups signed up to cook and others that are observing and/or taking the DO class. There are going to be a lot of black pots cooking next Saturday. The only thing left is having lots of good thoughts for nice weather. If there is anyone else on the fence about coming - give it a try, I'm sure you'll have a good time and good food. Paws - lookin' forward to meeting you and your group in uniform. See you next weekend. Matt

Matt I'm not sure what's going to be the status with us. Major Reynolds let himself get roped into hauling his Pappy camping next week-end and my guitar player thinks he is dying! (He has these little pitty parties pretty often!) With no back-up or road company I'll probably just cancel out. If I can find a travelin' companion I'll come up and at least shake your hand and get a peek at what's goin on.

That sure is a depressing thought. I hope you can work it out with someone so you can get up here. Even it it's just to see how things go so you can talk it up the next time we do this. Let me know what's going on when you can. Hope to see you there. Matt

Hope your shindig went well Matt. Sorry I couldn't make it up, maybe next time. The mood I've been in I wouldn't have been good company anyhow. Give us a report if you get a chance.

Still waiting on that report! The good news is that the DOG was a success and ended up in the gathering and organization of "Ohio Dutch Oven Enthusiasts" by a few of the folk who attended. That litle group is no some 60 members strong and growing like wild cudzu! Take a look at their link on the home lpage under cast iron and pay the group a visit. Shoot, join the group and tell them you found them on Ohio Camp Cooks. They have a ton of recipes, good technique, and sound advice for the DO officionado.
