I got two solutions there. I went looking for marble and did the same thing as Koot for a good long while. Then, somehow or the other my marble top went into cyberspace (probably during a divorce), and I ended up with a Tupperware hollow rolling pin which is filled with ice water on top of a plastic (thin mylar) cutting board. I have had that now for a number of years. It's real neat as you just put the rolling pin into the cutting board and roll it up together and rubber band it to store it. The cutting board has measured circles printed for pie crust sizes too. When I get ready to use these I fridge them for a while. I also have a marble rolling pin which works pretty well. For purchasing marble though head for the Home Depot, or Lowe's stores. You can order a sized chunk from them. www.amlinkmarble.com/materials.htm

Ya'll know I ain't no cook. I never have had an artistic touch about things. My cooking usually turns out about like a paint by numbers painting. I can get it done, but it never turns out like it's supposed too. I do like to eat though, God bless me. I've put away a good many delicious meal and rarely were they of my own creation. Every now and then I get a wild hair and hit the kitchen with a purpose. Sometimes I can be quite proud of the way it turns out and other times it just makes my dog very happy. If a feller was to make them pie crusts, couldn't they be used for other pastry type treats? I saw a gal (she had nice tits and a pretty face) on tv a while ago spreading a fruit mix onto a crust of some sort and rolled it up for baking. Could these be used in that manner?

That's the crust I use, Toby, to make tarts. I referring to the pastry, not the person making them........

Sure they can. Sometimes I'll make up crusts to make miniature cinnamon rolls. Just butter the crust cover it with sprinkled granulated sugar and cover it with cinnamon powder. Roll it up like a jelly roll and cut the rolls off and bake at about 375 until they spread out and brown up some. This makes good dough for fried pies too, savory and sweet. Spread butter on it fold it repeat, do it again five or six more times rolling it out after each fold and it turns into the flakiest pastry dough you ever saw ready for sweet rolls or strudel.

OK, now y'all went and done it! All this posting of pie crusts has made me want to bake a apple pie. Something I haven't done in years. So, this next Saturday will be apple pie baking day at my apartment.
If you see a mushroom cloud where East Tn. used to be that will mean I got a little confused on the ingredients. ;D

Naw, I'll be honest about it and do it all by myself. Question though. What makes the best pies? Granny Smith, Red Delicious, or them big yeller jokers I like to eat so much?

I like an apple called transparent for pies, they're grown locally, and pretty tart. I've never heard of that one, Toby, so out with the recipe....

And why not? As a preacher I think I am qualified. All preachers like to eat, especially apple pies. So when ya'll are ready, I'll post where to send them.

LOLOL! Seems to me that a pre-requisite for being a Baptist preacher is a big appetite for apple pie and fried chicken. Boy do I make some mean Southern Style Oven Fried Chicken, just the way Mom taught me. When I was a kid, though we were dirt poor country folk...I never remember any of the preachers turning down an invitation to Sunday dinner at our house when Mom's fried chicken and fried apple pies were on the menu. Her fried pies (some folk prefer to call them turn-overs) were very similar to the "empanadas" the Hispanic people make. She started out like making biscuit dough, but I think she used cold water to toughen the dough (and I think she left out the baking powder). Then it was rolled out thin and placed on a saucer. Add a big dollop of apples (simmered with sugar or artificial sweetener and cinnamon till a little thicker than apple butter), and fold the other half of the dough over and crimp the edges shut with a table fork after moistening the edges. Then you fry them on both sides in a light vegetable oil (in an iron skillet) until golden brown. To make them really special, serve hot from the stove with a big ol' dollop of vanilla ice-cream! MMMM-mmmmm! Gonna have to experiment with that one of these days and see if I can do that too. -Rogue-

I'm in, as long as it's Saturday. I'll be buying what I need on Friday. Recipe?! I don't need no stinkin recipe! I've never managed to make the same thing the same way. For apples I prefer winesaps but since those are lacking I'll head up to Coffee Ridge for the best Granny and Red Delicious apples in the country. We don't have the Apple Festival here for nothing! My mother says I need to make Dutch Apple pies in honor of my "heritage". I said, you mean the heritage you turned away from and Grandpa wouldn't talk to you for 10 years. ;D I guess she will be making shoefly pie then. YUCK!!
