I know the kids would love it. I'm really impressed with Aldi's. No bad products so far and their prices are terrific. What costs me 30 bucks in there is a hundred at Krogers. No sense to it either. Their milk was 2.50 a gallon and eggs 90 cents for freszh while Kroger's were 3.40 a gallon and 1.19 for near expired eggs. Cook then probably works the same shifts just backed off by three or so hours I imagine. Do the guys have to buy their own groceries or does the company provide them? It sure sounds like a really decent job. I've been doing my damndest to get two of my cousins to look into it. I just wish I were 20 years younger and fact is if anything happened to Sue and I, I think I would give cook's job a shot anyway.

Do the guys have to buy their own groceries or does the company provide them? Company provides all the groceries, soaps & detergents, toiletries, linens, ect. I figure the exercise stuff was company provided, too. Only thing the guys have to do is show up and work. Got my first copy of "Waterways Journal" today and there is a neat article in there about one of the floating river grocery stores down in Louisiana.

On the Ohio, they usually make about 100 miles a day. From Pittsbugh (mile 0) to Cincinatti (mile 475) takes close to 5 days. Of course this all depends on river traffic, lock or vessel repairs, fueling and such. A couple of weeks ago Mike and the crew sat at Lock #2 on the Monongahela for over 36 hours because they had the main chamber closed for repairs. Where you travel depends on which boat you're on. Mike is assigned to the Upper Ohio & Monongahela. Usually he travels from just above Mon Lock #2 (Pittsburgh) to Covington, KY. Occasionally, they do go farther down the Ohio, the Lower Miss. or Tennessee River.

This plan works well unless the cooks decides not to put an order in. Mike told me the other day the relief cook came aboard and found the pantry empty. They went through the cooler and it was empty except for what George Carlin would describe as "meat cake". Mike had to sign off on the order that came to $3400!! Lobsters and standing rib roasts ain't cheap! The bill was sent to HQ

If I start working the boats, I'm not gonna be the one cooking. I'm gonna be the one up in that big comfy seat doing the driving and gawking out over all them smart, good looking men on deck!! ;D No, they're not all smart or good looking, but I'd have the power to hire and fire until they were.

Crew change is Wednesday at 0800. Snake eyes and Toby (like all greenhorns) are assigned to "aft" (overnight) watch. Bring your thongs to conform with your captains new dress code. Forcast for our coordinates will be smooth sailing and 24o. Shiver me timbers!!!

Well, after yesterday morning, I'm glad I'm not a boat cook. There was a lady cook getting off duty from Mike's boat and into the little yawl. I'd quess her at around 450#. She couldn't just step down into the yawl, she had to lie down on the deck and roll over into the little boat while tossing her duffle down. At the same time, Mike's cook was trying to get out of the yawl and up onto the towboat. He's also a fairly decent sized person, maybe 370#. He's diabetic and I know his legs have been pretty bad lately. So the task is a little more difficult than usual. Well......let's just say two cooks took a morning plunge in the river and it took 14 crew members to resuce them. Not sure if they ever managed to bring up the yawl.
