Sound the Alert!
The 19th annual American Diabetes Alert® Day is Tuesday March 27, 2007
Help the American Diabetes Association spread the word during this one-day "wake-up" call by informing your family, friends, and co-workers about the seriousness of diabetes, particularly when diabetes is left undiagnosed or untreated. Sixty million Americans are unaware they have diabetes or are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
When you take the Diabetes Risk Test, you can also enter to win a LifeSpan TR2000-HRC Treadmill which has 10 levels of incline and 5 levels of decline that give you the ability to walk both up and down hill during your workout. This is the treadmill that was featured on the TV show "The View" and is signed by all of the hosts!

Panel Agrees on Whom to Test, How to Treat Pre-Diabetes
People who have pre-diabetes should undergo intensive lifestyle interventions, and possibly drug therapy, to reduce their risk of developing diabetes, as well as their long-term risk for developing diabetic complications, according to a consensus statement being published in the March issue of Diabetes Care.
A seven-member panel of experts convened by the American Diabetes Association last year developed these guidelines and others geared toward people who exhibit early metabolic abnormalities. The panel's report grew out of concerns arising from the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes, which now affects more than 20 million Americans. The disease is expected to continue increasing dramatically worldwide over the next two decades.

Protein Linked To Elevated Body Mass Index
U.S. scientists say they've discovered an abnormal protein is linked with elevated body mass index in people of American Indian and Mexican ancestry. Professor Gary Nelsestuen and colleagues at the University of Minnesota found the variant of a common blood protein, apolipoprotein C1, is also linked with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Low Testosterone In Men May Be Diabetes Risk Factor
Men with testosterone levels in the low-normal range are much more likely to have diabetes than those with higher levels, whether or not they are obese, researchers report in the journal Diabetes Care. "Low testosterone levels are common among men with diabetes and there is growing evidence that low testosterone may be a risk factor for developing diabetes," Dr. Elizabeth Selvin from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore commented to Reuters Health.

Black Soy Beans May Help with Weight Control
If studies in rats are an indication, a diet rich in black soya beans may help control weight, lower "bad" cholesterol levels and help ward off type 2 diabetes. Investigators had 32 rats gorge on a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet for 28 days. Some of the rats were given supplements with various levels of black soy beans and some were not (the controls).
This study suggests that incorporating black soy beans in the diet may "inhibit weight gain significantly," and favorably alter cholesterol levels, write Rho and colleagues in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Pigs Arrive in Bio-Secure Facility
U.S. scientists say they've taken an important step toward finding a cure for diabetes with the opening of a bio-secure facility for "medical-grade" pigs. Researchers with the Spring Point Project, an organization created to expedite the widespread availability of islet tissue for diabetes care, say the new $6.2 million, 21,000-square-foot Islet Resource Facility in Minneapolis will be dedicated to finding and funding the cure for diabetes.
