Hi Eaglenest!
Yeah, sorry you couldn't join us last week; glad to hear you're planning to participate in the DO event!
Your planned contributions are making me drool. Let me know what I can do to help out.
Are apples needed? We could round up some local apples for the pie and the butter. It's exciting to think we might be able to make apple butter over a fire out here!!!
The Thirty Day Fruitcake sounds amazing. (If you've got some extra starter and a recipe I'd love to give it a home for a back-up supply.)
Noodles also snags crackers from Crumb's Bakery, a local bakery. I'm also willing to bet Noodles will have coffee available.
I could do a pot of bean soup if no one has that covered.
It would be fun if we could round up some vittles from the woods around here like squirrel (200 lb:), deer.
A neighbor has been hunting the property and taking me with him for scouting forays and hunting lessons. He'd probably be able to help with the wild stuff if you guys were interested.
We've also got some big catfish in the pond if anyone feels like "trying" to catch them and cook them up on the fire. They're a good challenge!
I'm also an RN and have worked mental health in the past.
Yes, tough stuff indeed...too many drugs, diminishing support services, etc. I'm also hearing more and more stories about heroin addiction among young people around here. Sad stuff. Can't say I have any suggestions in this regard but I'm here if you ever need someone to talk to about the woes.
Where are you located? Look forward to meeting you!

I think the apples are taken care of, but thanks anyway. It is great deal of work for making the apple butter. What I am thinking is having the apples sauce cooked over night here and transport it hot. It would take a couple days to start with apples and cooking it down to apple butter. I would sweeten it and add the Cinnamon oil and let it cook and it takes a great deal of stirring, because it sticks so very easily. I live in Meigs County address being Racine and I think it should be Pomeroy, but we are talking about the government I have plenty starters for the 30 Day Fruit Cake and I will share it with you and the recipe. The fruits used are peaches, pineapple and mar-chino red and green cherries. I am not fond of Fruit Cake. but this one is so different and the starter comes from what you drain off the fruit after 30 days and I guess it would be a type of fruit brandy? After getting home from work this evening I was able to start mine. Actually, I started two and that way I will not have to do another one for Christmas. I have a farm and hunters as well, but only a very given few, as it is Posted. Last year my Beagle was shot in the woods on my property the Sunday before deer season opened. Thank goodness he survived. The 22ga bullet entered his shoulder and exited in his chest only missing his heart by a hair. One neighbor has hunted here for years and he eats what he kills. There are many deer, turkeys, rabbits, but no 200# squirrels!! There are not many solutions to the drug problem with all the prescriptions written makes it very easily to obtain. We had nurse practitioner that was prescribing too many of them. She is no longer with us and our new one is having a tough time tapering the doses until they are completely off it. Xanax seems to be the big problem. I had two intakes today one is opioid dependent and the other one was seeking. The latter one was very upset of having to have a psych eval and to meet with a therapist before seeing the nurse practitioner on 12-02-2008....I have a feeling he will not return. It is very rare to have a client that is a true mental health case that is not on some type of a controlled drug. Enough to this I best get off here and should you think of anything else for the event please share. Sharon

Sure wish one of us had either a crank-style ice cream churn or maybe an electric churn and a generator. Should would be nice to use fresh milk to make a batch of 'niller for them pies! Yes it will be a little cool out to be eating ice cream. That's what an extra flannel shirt if for. ;D If ready (and it looks like by then it'll be just about) perhaps I can offer some wild livations for just us'ns. BTW, I was digging in the freezer last night and found a tub of unsalted homemade Jersey butter that mom made from their cow's milk. Forgot it was there or we'd have used it by now. Should I hold it back for rolls or taters?

What kind of head count are we figuring? I'd like to start stock piling some ingredients, but don't want to go overboard.
Do we need to contribute some wood? Sure would hate to cut into kj's winter wood pile.

If our Ohio cooking isn't enough to make you want to hi-tail it up here, is being 35 min. from both KY and WV hunting enough??

Glad Mike will be with us. KJ, Ralph says he takes those galvanized cans and burns them off on his jet burner before he cooks with them. If I can manage to get that done we'll be in business. If not, Possibly we'll just deep fry the suckers. Just to have something a little different is the idea. (Besides, I kind of liked that fried turkey leg!) Maybe one of each? Hmmmmmmm.....
