Her luck will change soon. It's been too hot here for any good squirrel action.

I've got to admit, I'm starting to get the old "sphincter pucker" myself. About time to dig out the four -in-one, camo, boots, and back packs. Knock the dust off Brian's bow, Jimmie's 50, the 410 and the 12. One more re-enactment and with a little luck a trip to Knoxville and it'll be time to start getting up at "zero dark thirty" ! ;D

Carter I doubt I'll have the funds. The old propane tank is screaming and that will take pretty much my next month's check! I'll be lucky be able to fund the Marietta thing. But, I ain't giving up on it yet. If I can get all my bills paid, gas tank filled and live through Marietta and have 75 or a hundred left I'll be there. ;D

Daughter got her first squirrel this morning! They finaly decided the beech nuts were ready and we had 4 in the same tree. She missed the first one but the rest just kept right on eating and about a half hour later another presented her with a shot. She hit it and it fell out of the tree and she asked if she could go get it which,of course, I said OK. She dropped the gun and ran to it but stopped short because it was still moving. A few seconds later she picked it up and brought it to me. One pellet in the jaw,one to the brain and one through the shoulder. Not to bad for a .410 at 30 yards. She shot at one more knocking it out of the tree but it ran back up and got away. We called it a morning after that even though there where still plenty of squirrels moving about.

She insists it goes on the wall next to my squirrel. I don't think so. I plan to have it mounted and put in one of those glass bubble stands type thing.

What a cute little huntress. Now let her go do some varmint hunting with you and mont her squirrel in the jaws of her first bobcat. That'd be cool, huh? ;D

I'll be teaching her trapping this year so she just might end up with a bobcat or fox.
Neat thing is that she does not need a license except to hunt big game on the goverment until she turns 13. She's 11. By the time she's 13 I'll have her a lifetime license. It's $810. if I get it before she's 13 and doubles to $1620. after.

Turned her loose on her own this morning. She came back with 4 squirrels. I might get used to somebody else bringing home dinner for a change. ;D

Season opened today h ere in Ark. Took oldest son (Lucas) and tried to get him on a squirrel. But no such luck. We saw one real early this morning and thats all. I guess it's still too hot for them to be moving much. Oh well, there's always next time to look forward to.

Freddie keep track on your calendar cause they will lay low due to heat or cold weather for two days then venture out on the third day regardless. Look after them just at day break too and again close to sunset on lousy days. They'll be watering real early before their water source heats up so look near water at daybreak. And don't forget to get one of those red handkerchiefs and tie a buckeye in one corner. No it ain't for luck; it's for throwing on the other side of the tree to make the rat come over to your side! ;D

The little bushytail sumguns are everywhere this fall, but you can't gun hunt them until November.
Four on her own, eh Mars? Remember when we was kids and got to try it on our own for the first time? I hope you cook them up for her. Not much ever made me prouder when I was a kid than coming in with supper in my game bag and Dad helping (overseeing) me clean it them Mom or Granny'd fix it for the table.
I bet that little darling of yours was walking tall!

I cleaned them right there next to the truck. She "warned" me that one was pretty shot up as she shot it at point blank range. Did a nice job of gutting it for me. Talk about a kid getting an education, she said she now understands the damage a firearm can do and has a "new" respect for them.Money can't buy an education like that!

Toby, I had always hunted on my own, even the first time. Didn't have anybody to teach me. Kinda explains my views on hunting as no one taught me their ways except God via nature. I borrowed a gun and some shells and hit the woods alone. After I got my own gun I stayed in the woods. Sometimes up to 3 months. I consider myself fortunate in that I learned the ways of the animals and how to hunt them FIRST before ever being influenced by the ways of humans.

Daughters killing me. Had to return home to put some of the squirrels in the freezer. She hit one in the eye but it was still alive so she came back to camp and got me. She got a lesson on how to finish it off without shooting it again, stick over the head method.

Atta girl!!!
Is she stalking them up, or waiting and watching? Ever try rubbing two poker chips together to sound like a squirrel cutting pecans? Sometimes that'll bring them in closer when you spot them out aways.
