Wow! $2000.00 for 1 show goat? ? The poor thing wont bring that much for Grand at the fair will it? I remember my fair days. Made a couple trips to the State fair, but never placed. I never did livestock being from intown. My projects were trapping, photography, and fishing. Goodluck to the boys. If nothing else you'll have some good eating birds for later, and goats milk makes great cheese (unless you bought Billies that is.) If Lucas wins grand champion at the county fair, he should win somewhere around $1500. If he could win grand champion at state he would win about $5000. Thats for the goats. On the chickens all the boys will win is ribbon money, which last year Lucas got around $70 plus the sale of the chickens which brought $7 a piece last year. Didn't buy either a billie or doe. Bought a wether which used to be a billie. Wether make better show animals being they are not worried about breeding ;D You could have done a livestock project living in town. We do, and I have a small chicken house ( 10X10 ) built out back along with a goat pen (used to be a dog pen). You just can't get carried away with it.

It's a shame we don't live closer together. I'd give the boy a goat! I get them every now and then from these stupid Yankees that move out here to the sticks to start "mini" horse farms. They'll get five acres, built a house and barn and buy horses. Well ever since that movie Seabiscuit came out, they all ran out to buy "companion animals" for their horses. They get anything from pot bellied pigs, to cows. Once thhir "comanion animal" grows up though, they don't want it anymore and post it for free in the local paper. I watch the paper closely and go pick up every one I can. Right nw I have a 250# boar feeding in my back yard that was given away after being raised as a companion. He'll be in the freezer next week! The goats though, I worm them toss them in the pen and when I have several, I'll haul them to the auction. I've let them go as little as sixty dollars a piece, but I did get a pair of boer billies that fetched over two hundred for me and a papered Oberhously nanny that fetched me three hundred and all it costs me is a little time and gas. If I had more room, I could get all the horses I want also, but I don't have enough fencing. Love them Yankee wanna-be farmers! Wish your boys luck with them critters!
