I have two 6-string Estonian Kannels for sale. The Kannel is one of a dozen or so Baltic Psalteries - wing-shaped "lap harps". The most well-known example is the Finnish Kantele. All the cultures around the Baltic make them, with minor variations from place to place. These I carved out of solid birch, following blueprints of an instrument in a museum, that came from Saremaa Island back in 1802. The only variations from the original are laminate soundboards and autoharp tuners rather than violin pegs. Price $50 plus shipping. Photos available on request.

Ken what would one of these things cost that is a fairly authentic replica of the mid nineteenth century? Along with basic instructions of course! Or could these be modified?

Pawclaws - except for the ply soundboard, these ARE pretty accurate replicas of 19th cent, instruments. Iron or steel zither-style tuning pins date to the 1700s. I've seen museum descriptions of other instruments dating from late 17s/early1800s which reference iron tuning pins. Gotta remember that at that time the Baltic was a pretty primative area and the makers of these instruments mostly carved them by hand from what was available. For re-enactment purposes, though, it would not be out of line to say that a transplanted Finn or Lithuanian or Estonian or whatever, took advantage of the "newfangled" technology and used iron tuning pins instead of handmade tapered pegs. I do have a replica of the Saaremaa Island Kannel, with a Western red Cedar soundboard, that looks real pretty against the lighter Birch body. It has tuning pins, and is priced at $75, with tuning wrench and some reasonable instructions.

I got your jpicture. I was fooling around with an instant message on yahoo and lost it before I could save it. If you want me to post one here send it again and I will. I think I'm going to get on of them from you for the re-enactment display. Got one of the wing shaped ones you mentioned at first?
