Hello all.... Phil asked me to come on over and help out with this section, I have a little back ground in it and will do what I can to help, I won't be able to be around much for the next couple months or so, have fires to chase and hunting to do, (Tis the season and all) but will do all I can to help. If there is any questions that any one is interested in, or topics you would like to see, feel free to ask, and I will do what I can to answer. Don't be shy, put up things you know, and start topics of interest. I am the Survival Mod on Hunt Talk and welcome people to participate. I believe in the fact that no one person can know every thing. Only rule I have is that this area is not a place to do personal attacks on any one. These will be immediatly deleted. There are plenty of other places on this board to call names and carry on, The survival topics can be about any thing, including how to keep your beer cold on hot day's, I don't care in the least what it is that one feels the need to post on this topic as it is a very wide and varied subject. So have fun, and keep it light.... I just love this stuff.... ;D ;D ;D

Thanks a ton Russ for volunteering! Again, I really do appreciate it. You folk will discover in short order that Russ knows his business and he will quickly gain your respect. As he says, survival situations take many forms and I discover that there is always a common trait and that is; regardless of the situation, those who are prepared will survive where those who are not prepared usually won't! Enjoy, learn and take full advantage of this forum!

Several years ago I learned where to find firewood after a storm. If you roam the woods near your campsite you can usually find enough dead branches just hanging in the trees to cook your meal and dry out your clothes because you forgot to bring a poncho to string over your hammock...

Yes sir! The first place to look for fuel when the ground is all wet and soggy is "up". Select branches that are dead or at least dry. If they "snap" when bent; they'll burn. Getting a fire started, and started quickly, can be the difference between life and death. It can be as critical to survival as stopping the bleeding is to first aid. The hardest part is usually getting the fire going quickly. For that reason when I venture into the woods even for just a short walk I carry the main ingredients to fire building. Anyone have any ideas what should be on your person at all times?

LMAO!!! That is some funny stuff.... ;D Thanks for the into Phil, I sure hope I can stand up on that pedastel... Any thing lying on the ground should be left alone, the stuff doesn't hardly even burn good when the world is very dry... I see a lot of these types of fuels left only blackend out on the fires that I frequent... Any of your ladder fuels are the place to go, if they bend and not break, don't bother putting them on your fire until you get one going. Until you become proficiant at getting one going, I would carry some sort of fiber material (cloth, cardboard, etc...) with wax melted into it and roled into small tube shapes. Then put them in a plastic bag and they are ready to go. There are a lot of different way's and things to use as tinder, I prefer to find what I need as I go, but thats me...

Well, if you're out walkabout and lose all track of time and place and you have a lighter but aren't sure where to find tinder, look in your belly-button. Go on...look there now, I'll wait...hmmm-mmm...okay, you found lint didn't you. Also check other likely spots such as your pockets and if you're like me you'll even have some in your wallet. That may sound silly; but, the man has a point. You got to take advantage of everything Like Clint Eastwood said "A man's got to know his limitations!" A finger nails worth of lint gleaned from a trouser pocket could potentially be the difference between life and death. But Carter; didn't wejust get you set on puttin out fires? Now you want to be a Fire Starter again ?

LOL!!! I hope every one knows they can come up with and put any ideas they may have on this subject. I will be the first to say that I don't know every thing about this topic. Far from it, but if you give me a question I can't answer, I have a lot of other resources to look it up and get back.... I want this to be an open forum where this type of information flows freely. Some things may hold no interest to some, but even the topics that have a lot of different things in them, may hold one little tidbit of info that you may be able to pull from your head and save your life, or make a bad situation a little easier....
