Christopher is that squirrel cooker a two or three tine fork?

two. I take a 1/4 inch square stock, flatten one end, and split about an inch's worth on a hot cutter, then forge out the tines and clean up the 'crotch' before shaping the tines to their final position. Give the length a couple twists here and there, and forge a ring on the end for turning and nesting. The fork, while it takes a little longer to do, is easy - it's the stupid curlycue on the upright that's harder to get right.

I suppose a 3-tine would be possible, if you use rectangular stock and make two cuts, or are very good with a hot-cutter and get away with more flattening - at that size, cross-peining would be difficult and wouldn't pay off much, but I suppose it could be done.

I thought the upright looked like a custom job for the fork. How much weight do you think that fork can leverage out there?

Phil, here's a few photos of the squirrel cooker. The fork end: The ground spike: The contraption with a scale on the end... ground spike is buried about 4 inches or so, in hard clay/gravel soil: Me pulling on the scale, for over 5 pounds of resistance (kept hitting the ground, could have pulled harder.)... should be plenty for any small meal, as long as your ground spike is solidly planted: $40 plus shipping. Ground spike painted with heavy-duty grill paint, fork treated with beeswax for foodsafe use.

FYI, the first picture I posted of it on the welcome forum is one I cribbed from another site before I made mine... as you can see, mine has decorative twists in the fork, and a slightly smaller ring for turning... the small ring fits nicely over the round stock of the ground spike, and when threaded over the curlycue, nests the set together as tight as they'll get without rattling around. Perfect for the backpacking chef.

As Chris said, making a three or even a four tine fork is more difficult but certainly possible. I describe how to make a three tine in chapter two of book one of TRB.

Aww you guys just warm the cockles of my heart! ;D So Chris, you got one of those for me knocked out yet? ;D Go ahead and put it together if you would sir. I'm working on your flint. Talked to my cousin, kid who collects it, earlier this week and he says he has a five gallon bucket of it. Ought to be "something" in there that sparks! Pawpaw do you make your books available at any of the Sutler outlets?

Well if you can get it in the mail by Monday I think I can sell a couple for you in Michigan. I'm heading out early Friday morning though so you be the judge. Let me know and I'll fire you a check out tomorrow. The other things must wait. Can not get that trivet sorted out in my mind! My plan is to work it up as a logo which may be used as gifts or trophies. ;D Good luck with the event to both of you. I just found out the darling wife is going to North Carolina that week-end so I'll be dog sitting. (h well, I still got Michigan and Idaho!!) ;D

Christopher, have you sent the squirreel cooker yet? It has not showed up as far as I know. All the delivery guys Fed Ex, UPS and USPS know to put any packages into one of the cars. Haven't noticed anything different in any of them yet. Do I need to look more closely or start an inquiry?
