I'm not sure if this is going to help, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway, I've got a friend that lives in North Idaho, a pretty decent blacksmith. Years ago, smithy work was his hobby, his real job was metallurgist, for a little outfit called NASA (yeah, that nasa) After some cutbacks, him, and some of his cronies, went their separate ways. I suspect our tax dollars gave these guys quite an education in smithing, they came with other degrees. Anyhow, he makes some of the finest damascus I've ever seen. Ray has always been good about sharing his knowledge, he may even know where the other guys went, they may be near some of you. His name is Ray Rantanen, his site is www.raysknives.netfirms.com I have a spatula he made from a railroad spike, I know he drew it out with a trip hammer, there is enough material to make a great spatula about 14 inches long. Glad my folks never saw one of these. Hope this helps someone.

Ray is a nice guy, ha has always passed on what "little" knowledge he has. If you go by his place, you can go in the shop, he'll let you help make the knife, or whatever, from the very beginning. He'll forgeweld, fold, etc,all with your help. He'll show you how to make different patterns in damascus, the whole deal. He showed me the difference in rairoad spikes, also. The spikes in a curve of the tracks, are high carbon, marked with an H C on the head. They make a pretty decent knife. Email him, call him on the phone, or show up, he's OK. He's enough good ol boy you'd never know he worked for nasa. I should have warned you, damascus is addictive......

Hey Kass! I just had a brain something?....idea If your going to get a knife or two from Ray, maybe we could get him to do something with an OCC logo, something that can be had only if your a member here, or something like that. Ray makes the knives one at a time ( I'm sure you know that) so maybe we could have something done for us. Here I go, thinkin again.......

Maybe so! Any of you guys want to ask him please feel free to do so. I have no problems with the members using the logo. Just do not sell it for profit with the logo on it. I don't play dat. Nothin' here so far has cost nobody nothin' and I won't have nobody profiting from the donated labor and ideas of you guys and gals. ;D You know so far we have been in six magazines, two radio shows, I do not know how many web sites we are on and we have two TV spots comin' up. One of the things Mr Gregg Gutschow and I discussed was his inferrence that nobody couild put together a club with a free website and magazine. "Welllllll Gregg, guess what? So OHio Camp Cooks is not now nor ever will be a profit making enterprise.
