Well I put the 75 grain Muzzy Broadheads on today and shot all of my arrows at 20 yards. All hit the target but the groups got a lot wider. Thank GOD the vitals of a deer are so big

Fred Bear Grizzly recurve. Prolly about 53 lbs at my 29" draw length. Bow season started on Sep 15 here in MO. I went that afternoon, and got within seven yards of a decent doe. I was on the ground though, and she'd been watching me as she walked straight toward me on the trail. She bolted as I tried (like a knucklehead) to draw on her.

First time out with the Crossbow (Barnett RC 150) that Brian Warner sent me. Guess what! Twenty yards using a "sticky spot" of 1/2 inch as a target; within an inch every shot!! Holy Cheeze Ritz Batman is that thing ever powerful!! My cousin made up a styrofoam target of very dense foam about a foot thick with plastic netting all around and the bolts break through at 20 yards!! No problem killing with this bad boy!! I'm adding 125 grain mechanicals tonight for the first hunt. Been baiting a spot by the water with salt, apples, and corn for about six weeks now. By the way boys, I won't be needing the assist strap which reduces the pull to half. Seems as though the "new me" can cock it all by myself!! ;D

I shoot for years a Jennings Buckmaster 200, axle to axle 39". Braceheight 6". Sight: 1 pin set dead on at 15 yards, I can hold dead on from zero to 20 yards and slightly higer at 25 yards. Bow is set at 65lb, never saw any need to set it higher even for moose and elk.
Arrows are Easton XX78 Super Slam 2514 with five inch helical feather fletching and tiped with 125 grain Magnus I
Doesn't sound very modern does it? But it works very well the bow in this configuration is forgiving and with less gadgets I have less to worry and go wrong. The arrows are on the heavy side because I like to hit the deer with a rock not with a feather, its called "penetrating power".
But wait I have one more bow which I use when I spot and stalk for deer. It's simple to use and very light. It is a Bob Lee Costume Signature Recurve Takedown Bow tip to tip 60", 60lb draw weight. Arrows are same as above but sometimes I switch the broadhead for another proven and tested head, the Thunderhead 125 grain.
Camouflage: ASAT and Predator, the only camouflage ever designed from an animals point of view and not to the hunters fancy.

What am I shooting?
Matthews Q2, 34" axle to axle, 67# draw weight, Cobra Sidewinder sight, Vibra-check stabilizer, Paradow wrist sling, Quikee III detachable quiver, Tiger Tuff Shur Shot rest, Easton A/C/C 3-60 carbon aluminum composites w/4" all white parabolic feathers l/w, and 100gr. NAP Spitfires. And, I'll bet a pan of Martha White biscuits it penetrates farther than Othmar's. Farthest kill with the setup? 125# boar hog, pass-through at fifty-eight yards.
Damon Howatt Dream Catcher 50#@28", I'm twenty-nine inch with the recurve. Shooting Port Orford cedar shafts with five inch full helical parabolic feathers l/w, and 125gr Zwixkey eskimo broadheads. Shot with a homemade deer hide tab. Farthest kill with the bow was a 180lb sow at twenty-five yards. Spine shot...dropped in her tracks!
Earl Hoytt custom longbow at 55#@28, I'm a twenty-nine inch draw with the longbow. Shooting port Orford cedar shafts with five inch full helical shield cut feathers l/w, and 125gr Magnus broadheads. Shot with homemade deer hide tab. Farthest kill with the bow was a 75# boar hog at twelve yards. Double lung with half shaft pass through, breaking the far foreleg on exit.
When?
Whenever I get a chance and thank God that's often!

Hey, that's kinda cool, n2! You've got the trifecta of bow styles covered. I don't ever touch my McPherson compound, anymore. But that's because the Bear recurve is so much fun!
Do you ever have trouble switching back and forth between the recurve and the longbow?

What makes you say that? I never have had any problems with penetration, actually my field note say that I have 98% pass trough shoots and the average travel distance after the shot is 30 yards. My self imposed limit is 30 yards with the compund bow and 20 yards with the traditional bow. This decision is not based on the equipments capability, but with what distance I am proficient under field condition. I use to have the latsest modern gadgets the moment they came down the pipe. I also had constant worries of stuff comming loos or malfunction. The bow was noisy as hell too. My current set up is very basic and without worries plus deadly quiet. In my opinion it really does not matter what a hunter shoots, what matters is how proficient he is with his equipment. I never would riticize someone because of his weapon choice. So what makes you give such a silly unfounded statement?

Do you ever have trouble switching back and forth between the recurve and the longbow? You are right, shooting a tradional bow is fun. I use my Bob Lee when I spot and stalk because it is much lighter than the compound bow. Often I take the bow out just to do some stump shooting and for rabbit hunting with blunts. Great fun.

Othmar, calm down buddy. I wasn't trying to be offensive, I was trying to be funny. Your setup has no faults that I see.
You asked, "What makes you give such a silly unfounded statement?"
It was in response to the comment in your post when you wrote, "The arrows are on the heavy side because I want to hit a deer with a rock not a feather, it's called 'pentrating power'."
I was just responding that's all. If you said you drove a Ford, I probably would have told you that my Dodge is faster. If you write with a number two pencil, I've got a number three that's better.
Oh....and tongue in cheek aside. It's probably true!
Yeah Bloodlust, I love bowhunting and archery in general. I do have a little trouble with switching on and off of the traditional bows. Because of the limited sight window on my longbow I have to cant it over pretty hard to open my field of view, which brings my anchor point a little farther up on my cheek. After a few sessions with them, I'm tuned back up.
Of all of them, my recurve is the most fun to shoot. It's much more accurate and comfortable than the longbow and is just more simple than the compound. I try to kill a game animal with each one each year. I have to cover the bases for the articles I write and nobody wants to read about what you did a couple of years ago, they want to know what have you done lately, so they each get to the field and the range pretty regular.

No, I don't think you do get it.
I'm not trying to be better than anybody, I was trying to make a joke that didn't work out. It's called humor. I was trying to be humorous....I'm just not good at it.

n2, I got a question for you concerning the Fl regs. It revolves around my mobility impaired and crossbow permits from La. I recieve my licences free from this state due to my service connected disabilities. My total rating is currently 50%. Because of my back and shoulders this state allows me to use my crossbow I also can use my ATV to get around better in the WMAs. What will Fl. allow for hunting in case like mine when I go down to hunt with my son. Will I be able to use my crossbow or ATV? Any info you may have is appreciated, Thanks, Brian

You bet! The only problem that MAY arise is during the designated archery season where they are legal only for archers with disabilities. In that case, you may have to apply for a non-resident disability license, however the commission is voting in January to allow crossbows during the archery season to anyone, so it may not be an issue.
during the general hunting season, anyone can use a crossbow, but then, you may as well tote your rifle. Crossbows can be used year round on private land for hogs at anytime, day or night.
