Made this up a while back on one of our rainy days.
2 lbs deer cubed into about 1/2" chunks braised in olive oil, then added 6 cups water, 4 small spuds diced, 1/2 onion diced, several shallots diced, blast of seasoning salt, blast of seasoning pepper, blast of Mrs. Dash, couple cloves garlic crushed & diced fine, sprinkling of basil, sprinkling of dried mustard, sprinkling of ground bay leaf, blast of paprika to blend everything together. Let this cook about an hour then added in 1/3 cup brown rice, 1/3 cup wild rice, 1/3 cup barley and when it is all done I will throw in a can of corn and can of green beans drained. Will bake up some biscuits to sop up the juice out of the bowl. May have to add a little more water depending on how much the rice & barley soaks up. If you want to thicken the broth to make it like stew then mix up a couple few tablespoons of flour real good into 1/2 cup cold water and pour into the mix stirring constantly so you don't get lumps and bring to a boil. I did this in the crockpot and simmered till the spuds, rice & barley was done.

Oh man that does sound good! I'd add a bit more meat if I coked it. I like a lot of meat in my stews.
Never added barly to anything before. What's it taste like?

It tastes like barley..... ;D
Actually it kind of takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. I use it in all my soups and stews and sometimes just by itself with bullion.

You can never have to much meat in a stew.I also prefer either fresh or frozen veggies rather than canned but to each his own. If you have never used barley before, try it I think you will enjoy it. snake-eyes

If I come across any down here, I might just do that. I honestly haven't ever seen it in the veggie isle, or atleast don't remember seeing it. I'll keep my eyes open. My venison stews, I always put in a bunch of cut up taters, peeled carrots, and a stick or two of celery. Love that stuff!

Look for it in the dry staples isle where the beans are. I get mine here at Sprout's. They have big tubs and you scoop it out into sacks. I get my beans, rice, barley and other dry stuff there. Most of their products are 'organic' and pretty pricey, but they have a good selection of spices, dry staples and veggies.
To me 'organic' means you grew it in horse, cow or chicken shit. In these fancy stores just means they can charge you more because they didn't use pesticides before they bottled, canned or processed it.

This is one of the easiest stews I have ever found. It's also very tasty.
1-2 lb cubed stew meat (beef, venison, even chicken or turkey works well) 2 cans Veg-All mixed vegetables 2-3 medium potatoes, cubed (this is optional, but I like extra taters in my stew) 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 can cream of tomato soup 2-3 tbsp flour seasoned with salt and pepper 1 tbsp olive oil
Dredge stew meat in flour and shake off excess. Brown in olive oil in a skillet.
Add browned meat to a crock pot, add cubed potatoes, then the cans of Veg-All. Dump the mushroom and tomato soup over the top. Cook for 4-6 hours on low.
