Well in between all the sawing, chopping, burning, spraying brush/brambles and other assorted chores, I managed to get my garden out. Since no grass has been seeded yet, I decided to plant the whole yard area - about an acre - into veggie garden. Planning on filling a bunch of jars this year. What critters come to nibble will be put in jars too. Watering plays havoc on the cistern. But with all this rain (2" just this morning) I shouldn't need to carry water for a while.
-Maters are already setting. -Pickles, winter squash, eggplant, and peppers are blooming heavy. -Beets had a struggle getting started, but are making it. -Watermelon are starting to vine out. -Pumpkins were set out too early and took a frost. But they look like they're thinking about growing. -Cabbage are starting to come along nicely, too. -Green beans and muskmelon got in the ground late, but all this rain ought to have them up in a couple days. -Sweet corn is up but for how long I don't know. Not near enough nitrogen here for corn. -Mulberry seedings are in pots on the porch waiting for fall planting. Picked my first mulberries yesterday from a tree down the road.

Oooooh, I wanna mulbery cobbler awful bad Faith! Why come you so far away and teasing me like that? Cngrats on getting in that garden. Ours is taken off like crazy from all the rain we been getting and we been eating up the fresh squash, green beans, and zichini. We also got a ton of tomatoes coming on the vines regular, bushels of hot peppers, sweet peppers, bell peppers, and such. The corn is stunted and runty and the cucumber vines are turning yellow, but the rest is doing great. Ought to be picking the field peas by Saturday too. Mmmm, Mmmmmm!

OOPS!! I had 4 eggplants planted in 5-gal buckets because they take a little more water/nutrients than our ground can provide. We got 4 inches of rain over the past two days and the buckets were overflowing. I tried to pour the water off, but the dirt..er..mud came pouring out too. Decided to take the .410 and shoot a hole or two in the buckets to allow drainage. Lopped off every one of them right through the stem. If they didn't wash over the hill yesterday evening, I also got okra, zukes, horseradish, rhubarb and asparagus out there. Kinda off topic here, but the Bible study topic Tuesday was "faith without works is dead". One of the little guys raised his hand and said that our teacher was right. "I heard Papaw tell Mamaw if Faith ain't outside working, you better stop by to check on her 'cause she might be dead." I about split my side laughing! ;D

No winter garden this year..... Everybody was either too damn lazy or too damn busy to put one in. Anybody got anything growing? We'll be putting in our Spring garden about the first of March. I know daddy's got to have his pole beans and black eyes and prolly gonna put in a couple of rows of cucumbers for some home canned pickles. It's a sad sight now though as it lays barren and unworked...

Does growing moss count? I think it's starting to grow on me since I ain't been doing much this winter. I don't think my rhubarb made it. I'm guessing that at least three of the peach trees won't pull through either.

Moss on you, Faith? You get more done by nine o'clock than most folks get done all day! I doubt you got moss on ya anywhere! Sorry about the peach trees; I know it sucks, we lost all nine of our orange and grapefruit trees I'm afraid. Don't matter how well you pile up around te base, it was below freezing for two weeks in a row... They're browning out already. Even if the root base makes it, we'll have to re-graft them and wait another three years before we get anything bearing on 'em again.

Well...it sure isn't a purdy specimen, but here's the first tomato from this rocky hill. Considering what it had to grow in, I guess it'll do. As I suspected would happen, Rhubarb didn't make it back this year. Don't think I'll replant. For what nice crowns cost, it's cheaper to head over to Athens farmers market once a year and stock up. Only saved one peach tree. Planted 30 pits from Phil's peaches the other day and we'll wait and see what happens. Was also going to put out a horseradish bed. But after Mike discovered Ingelhoffer's horseradish sauce at Krogers, it's not worth my effort to have to dig and grate fresh. Inglehoffers is some potent stuff!! They're definately using a Bavarian stain.
