Have finally gotten a few old rolls of film developed and thought I'd share. As the season rolls along, I'll have more. Took some today. Maybe in a month or so, I'll have them too. These first ones are from back in February. Nothing much happening yet. Total garden measures 150' X 300' (45,000 sq ft). Small by some standards. But large by the definition of a "normal" household garden. It's huge around here unless you're Amish and have 20 kids. This is about half as big as last years. It went to the tree line on the right by the neighbors house. Thought I'd try down sizing. Next year, I'm going back to the full area. From the road. From the far corner looking back towards our abode. Add another 50' to the right side to get to the north end. Picture got cropped. We're half plowed! And slinging poop! Load 1 of 10.

Around April 15. The brown dead-looking strip along the top of the plowed area is all potatoes mulched with straw. It all looks kinda bare. It's now full of watermelon, pumpkins, cukes, zukes, 3 plantings of beans, tomatoes and a whole bunch of other stuff plus what you see here. Everything has grown a BUNCH since these pics. The peas are now almost as tall as the T-post and are in full bloom. And the best part is l've kept it as weed-free as when these pics were taken! ;D ;D hoe-hoe-hoe!! (patting myself on the back)

I can understand the "back pattin" thing..but who you call'n a Hoe? ? ? ? ;D garden's looking good, Faith...you talking about big gardens..when we was kids we had 1 that was 45K, 1 that was 20K, 1 that was about 15K and 1 that was 5K...there weren't 20 of us kids only 12 ;D ;D ;D the 15K was nothing but taters..we sold them or about half of them each year...the little garden was for maters and kitchen veggies...like leaf lettuce, green onions and peas etc...

Whew! What a day for picking yesterday! But I gotter done. Had 4 bushels of baby spring greens, 20 heads of Romaine lettuce, 25 bunches of 14 green onions, 28 bunches of 8 beets, 2 bushels each of spinach and mustard greens, and a bushel each of snow peas, collards and kale. How this little garden does it beats me. The picking part isn't so bad. It's the standing at the wash tub for hours washing, weighing and packaging everything that gets to me. I gotta buy an old fridge to put stuff in overnight before markets. Just ain't enough room for groceries and all these veggies in our kitchen fridge. Sold everything but a half pound of spring greens and a bundle of onions by 9:30 this morning. My folks have the table next to me for their cheeses, so I swapped the onions, greens and a dozen chocolate chip cookies for a hunk of strong stinky cheese. Beans are blooming and I should be picking the first ones by this coming Thursday. The way they look now, in another 3 weeks when all 15 sections are ready, I'll be looking for some wet ba......er, uh......Mexicans to do the picking In my dreams!! Zukes and cukes are just now setting male blossoms. Will be real soon on them. I noticed the first tiny tomatoes starting to set last night. Can we "MMM MMM Maters?" ;D

Nearly July already. Lots is already done for the year. But it ain't all over yet. Am going to try to strreeetch this season out as long as possible since it's my last with this plot. Figuring they won't kick us out until everything is picked. These pics were taken today. This is where the salad stuff was. Muskmelons are there now and starting to vine out. Beans are on the far left and absolutly loaded. Peas on the far right are just about done. Cabbage is about half formed. Pumpkins are the size of baseballs. When they're done they'll be 3 ft across. Cukes, zukes and tomatoes are setting hard now. Potatoes bloomed last week. Another week or so and should start digging new potatoes. Watermelon sure are trying. But it's been too cool and wet for them to do much.

Remember the song "Look at Them Beans"? Kids and I picked 7 bushels today. Rained the whole time we were out and stopped only when we decided to take a break. I know you're not suppose to touch the bushes when they're wet, but it had to get done. Wish you were all close by so's I could share! Kids aren't too bright though. I was willing to pay $3/bushel for them to pick since it was raining and muddy. Each of them stopped after the first peck was picked. Go figure! Guess I got off cheap, but had to pick the rest all by my little lonesome. Mike didn't have any problem watching me pick in the rain either. He said from his vantage point on the porch swing, it was pretty good wet T-shirt & shorts day. <sigh> As long as I brightened his day....I suppose.

You might be needing those beans this winter. Just change your name to "Shuckin' Beans!"

That song "Take an Old Cold Tater and Wait!" got his cousin Little Jimmy Dickens , in a whole lot of trouble. I guess Jimmie's momma took offense at it cause it belittled her and the family. She sued him and won! Cleaned his clock in the court house and they didn't speak ever again. Jimmie is still alive I think. At least he was five years ago when Ken got to visit with him.

I think Jimmy is around five foot nothin! ;D Jimmy must be pushin near eighty or darn close to it now. Heck, I remember him and Grandpa Jones. He was on Grand Old Opry in black and white in the mid 50s.

Jimmy was at the C. M. A. legends jam in Pigeon Forge last year during the North American Country Music Association's annual GT. My dad and two sisters sing up there each year in the competition and there's always a meet and greet at the end of the week long gig. They said Jimmy was one of the stars that showed up that actually seemed happy to be there with them. He's about a hunnert and fourteen, or somethin' like that, bu still out there gettin' it done. Miss Faith, you wouldn't mind telin' more about that wet T-shirt and shorts would ya?

I met Jimmy about 25-30 years ago at a nightclub that used to be THE place in San Juan County called The Country Palace. It was an upscale country nightclub that the best of Nashville visited from time to time. Jimmy is a charming person, with very polite manners, and as stated before, seems to be happy to meet friends anywhere he goes. He's about belly-button tall alongside me with his hat and cowboy boots on, but he's ten foot tall in personality. ;D I have nothing but good things to say about the man. Here is a link to a bit of a biography: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Jimmy_DickensSadly, The Country Palace has slid down a greased rail over the years. Now it has been renamed "Tom Cats" and is just another sleazy strip joint. I wouldn't be caught dead in there!

Miss Faith, you wouldn't mind telin' more about that wet T-shirt and shorts would ya? Just for you, Toby. Here's the details on the wet T-shirt and shorts contest! It was a sultry mid-July evening in the rolling hills of eastern Ohio. Humidity was high. So high, a blanket of warm mist wrapped itself around my body as I stepped out from the old farmhouse with my stack of willow baskets to pick crisp, plump green beans. I was clad in a pair of navy blue jersey shorts with a worn elastic waist, sneakers, and a thin, slightly over-sized, faded pink T-shirt. My long, strawberry blonde hair was pulled into a ponytail which dangled and danced to the small of my back. I bent over and started picking on the longest rows first. It wasn't long before streams of perspiration were dripping down my face, gliding down my neck, and rolling down between my bosoms. I raised the front of my shirt high and wiped my face. As hot as it was though, I persevered in getting every crisp, long bean picked. By the time I started stripping beans off the second row of erect plants, two baskets were full. I opted to hold up the hem of my shirt and pick into the fabric basket I had created. The beans were weighty and the thin shirt pulled low from my neck exposing a modest peak of one dangling bra-less orb. By now a steady cool rain shower had started and within a few short minutes, I was drenched with a mixture of sweat and rain that made moving slippery business. I emptied the beans from my shirt into a gunny sack at the end of the row. The shirt was very stretched and clung to my shorts. As I walked, the weight of the shorts fabric pulled them and the stuck on shirt lower and lower down my wet glistening body until I was nearly stripped of all garments. I squeezed the water out of my shirt hem and gave it a flap in the breeze as to loosen it from my skin. No longer did I feel the binding threads sculpting me into unnatural positions. The rain continued as I straddled to pick the fourth long, wide swath. Streams of water went rolling down my legs and into my slouched white socks. Soon my feet were cold and wet. I had to step cautiously as not to trip on a weed or pebble or worse yet, slip in the gooey oily mud in the isles between the rows. About half way up the row, the shirt and shorts were once more saturated with water and hanging very low. My chest was nearly entirely exposed. I stopped to shake off the rain and felt something soft but yet firm under my foot. Wouldn't you know.....the shirt and sorts had clung to me and stretched my knockers all the way down to my socks. I'd tramped on my own ol' saggy tit!! Gotcha!! OK, Toby, you can put your tongue back in your mouth and close the barn door! Next time, remind me to roll theese things up on curlers first!! ;D ;D ;D
