A very good family friend passed away last week at the ripe ol' age of 92. He was one hell of a guy. Anyhow, he would make this in the late summer with fresh from the garden veggies. It was great. I'm going to try to see if I can repeat how he made it one the corn on the cob starts coming in.
Here is his recipe as he wrote it in a local cook book.
Use a 5-gallon can -(purchase at Bakery)
12 to 18 ears of fresh corn
Washed new potatoes
2 onions 2 green peppers
Sausage - any desired sausage, such as Bratwurst, Polish, or wieners
Peel back husks of corn and remove silk. Then replace husks, cutting off the tops of husks and cob.
Place in can, on end, with butt of ear down.
Cover with 2 or 3 layers of washed new potatoes, onions and green pepper.
On top, put sausage, in layers. Add 1 quart water. Place cover on can and be sure to make several holes in cove for steam to escape.
Cook over open fire(outside) until potatoes are done.
{The can that is being referred to is an old cherry can that you could get at out local bakery. I do not think you can get them anymore. My recommendation would be to try to use one of them popcorn tins that have the 3types of corn in them. They come out at X-mas time. Another suggestion would to buy a small metal garbage can. I saw a 10 gal. at the store the other day for about $15. That could be to big though. Another thought is a turkey fryer pot. You would have to make a lid with holes in the top. This a great think to make for a good size family gathering or what have you.} Duff
