I've heard of a couple remedies to 'remove the fangs' from a batch of beans: 1) Add a handful of carrots while soaking the beans. Remove carrots and discard the water before cooking. or 2) Add about 2T. baking powder to the soaking beans. Discard water and rinse beans before cooking. ".....lighter, lighter...." My mother swears by about a 1/4 teaspoon of ginger in a pot of beans. Some of the Hispanic ladies swear by a tablespoon of sugar...others, a cup of cola in the pot of beans. But the best method I've found is to take a wooden spoon and drill anternating holes in the handle, first one side, then the other, then affix wooden dowels the size of the hole and projecting about an inch out from the handle. After stirring the beans, make sure you leave the wooden spoon in the pot...leaning up against the side. That way, using the dowels in the spoon handle for a ladder, the farts can climb out -Bill, the Rogue-

Now boys I'm gonna tell you the truth. All old wives tales. The reason beans give you gas is because they are still substantially undigested in the small and later the large intestines. The bacteria presence there is to take care of the last of the nutrient digestion. This process causes gas as the bacteria break down the last of the tough fibers. All those things about changing the water, adding things to the pot, except CocaCola now this may help because it is a very strong acid, etc do not work at all. Beano knows this and is designed to help in the right place . The only other thing you can do is to eat lots of yogurt or of course make sure your beans are partially digested before you eat them! www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Why+beans+make+you+fart.%22&spell=1

If you check your herbal medicine references you'll find that ginger as well as a few other spices are well known carminatives (gas eliminators). Not too sure how well it works...seems some of us have problems regardless of what we do. Incidentally, someone mentioned peanuts and soybeans. those are two things I have to avoid religiously! I'm highly intolerant to both having a dangerous allergic reaction that causes my airways to close off...much the same way wasp and bee stings affect me. So if you ever want to get rid of the Rogue without a trace...here's your cue. Try shooting me and you'll only piss me off...I might still get ya before I drop. -RW-

Rogue,
That sucks. I couldn't imagine not having a cold beer and a ton of cashews while watching a Packer game.

Jayme,
I can have Cashews and Almonds...just no peanuts or soybean products. You'd have to kick my rump to keep me out of the Walnuts and Pecans. Same with Pistachios.
I can't remember what the constituent in peanuts and soybeans is called that I'm allergic to...I'm thinking it's some form of protein...I have to avoid anything with the soybeans in it...no tofu (not that I'd eat that anyway) and not even the salad crunchies that have the textured soybean protein that resembles bacon bits. This causes me to have to be extremely careful if I eat in an oriental place since they use a lot of soy products and peanuts...especially in the Mongolian and Szechwan dishes.

Slept like a log last nite :oFollowed Rich and his friend Ron around(up & down) part of his property. WHAT A DAY!!We went downstream from his large gushing spring all the way to Bull Shoals lake investigating and looking for treasures along the way!! Found where a wild turkey had met his fate and collected his wing feathers! :DThan I hit the Mother Lode ;D :DRich's dog was rolling on her back in something neat the bank so went over for a look..a large 8-point had died there months back and she was rolling on what was left :'(Right next to the remains was the intact head--in perfect condition..just like a professional European job!! What a find! We enjoyed ourselves in the plus 70* weather and hada a great hike. Must be getting used to following Rich as I am NOT stiff and sore like the last trip! Thanks Rich and Ron for an enjoyable day and I will bring treats for your "little girl" for finding the buck mount for me.......Bill

Bill,
Glad you enjoyed yourself. Ron is leaving today and I'm hitting the old grindstone again. Daisy is a dog and just about anything you want to give her she'll eat.
Hopefully, in a couple of weeks we can get your friend some fresh turkey feathers.
Ron and I both had a great time too except that Ron said he was a little embarrassed that he couldn't keep up with you on our forced march. I told him to get out into the woods more often and stay out of that danged golf cart and he'd to a lot better.
Rich
