We gathered together again today for a big platter of fried hog jow (sp), cracklin cornbread, dried black eyed peas seasoned with a little ham fat, and a couple of jugs of sweet tea.
I had a big slice of sweet onion with my corn bread and man, oh man, was it some kinda good! That's the menu we've shared on the first, with very few deviations, since before I was born. Granny insists..and I'm damn glad she does, cause that's some good eats.
S'posedly, her menu is to bring us good luck and prosperity and it must work. No matter what event gets us down or what unfortunate situation we get faced with, we're still together as a family and you can't ask the Lord for any more than that!
Ya'll eat anything special for the first?

We have black-eyed peas (the family did, I had pinto beans instead), boiled cabbage, venison, and cornbread. The legend goes that if you eat black-eyed peas you will always have change in your pocket. The cabbage supposedly means you will have folding money all year long.

I know, I say this a lot, so: Mule deer steaks, mashed potatoes, green beans, and moo juice. Guess I pretty much live on deer meat.

Well, I broke tradition this year...yesterday was Boy Boy's last day at home (sort of) we all meet at a smallish diner and had breakfast for lunch...that's Girly Girl, Derick (her son, he is the one that joined the USAF) Brendan (her other son) and Shea (Brendan's GF) and myself...kind of a send off meal and Q time...dropped him off at the recruiter's office and off he went...just kinda snacked on pulled pork, chips and dips and such the rest of the day...nothing really special....

Pork loin, taters, kraut, carrots, onions and a few carroway seed go in the crock pot on the 31'st and slow cook all night and get muched all day. Dad always had the black eyed peas as well.

We always put on a big feed for mom & dad's anniversary...err...New Years Day. Even though they were out of driving distance this year, the feed still went on as usual.
20# western style pork ribs, 3 bags of kraut, some sliced apples, onions and caraway cooked long and slow on the kero heater . While that cooked, Mike and the boys were burning brush. So, I sent a kettle with 12# of wedged cabbage with them to cook outdoors. Then I made a big cranberry salad and let it set up on the cool porch. As everything was cooking and jelling, I snuck off into town for some punch fixin's, chips, and 50% off holiday cookies and poundcakes to munch on during all the ball games.
