Dropped off the apps for the remaining fall hunts. I picked one hunt only for deer, muzzle loader hunt the end of Dec, if I don't get it I will head out with my bow. I know where I want to hunt, planned to backpack in there this last Jan till I blew my knee out. Last year there was a 213" buck taken off the waterhole and I have walked up on deer a couple times that would be that size or bigger while scouting.
Also only picked one hunt for desert bighorn sheep, expect I will only get a bonus point as usual but lightening does strike every now and then. There are a total of 90 sheep tags in the state, 78 desert and 12 Rocky Mtn. When I started applying in the 90's there were about 6000 people applying every year, last year there were over 17000 folks that put in - pretty tough draw odds. There are sheep tanks in the wilderness area I plan on deer hunting in and I have seen sheep on a couple trips in there. I know where the game is, just need the tags to put that knowledge to use.
Had my oldest daughter put in by herself for coues deer down south. Then had my youngest and her boyfriend put in together for the same units. Based on the odds I will be helping out on one hunt for sure, maybe two. My girls have been hunting since they were little, but the men they hooked up with have not. I will go along to watch the show and sip bourbon while I tell them where to cut, then I grunt and piss and moan while they hump the deer out of the hills.
Between the elk tags the youngest and I have, and hopefully a deer tag or three the freezer should be full this fall.
