What's everyone got planned for Father's Day! My wife knowing how I hate surprises informed me last nite that my four darlings along with their significant others and 9 grandkids will be here to honor me the Sat prior to Fathers Day. Of course I will be required to grill chicken, hamburgers and dogs. But that's OK. My wife will make potato salad and deviled eggs. But that's OK. My son said he will bring a couple doz ears of corn that I could grill up.But that's OK. I just have to give thanks that I am only honored once a year Just kidding I wouldn't want it any other way! It shows they still need me and they can't cook worth a s..t.! snake-eyes

Will probably send dad a card and call him. I usually do something for Mike too. But he'll be back on the creek by then. Kids will be scattered out over three states. Unless he's up in this section of river, I guess he'll just have to settle with a call. If he's close by, I might wade out to the barges to present his present in person.

Between looking at the wrong calendar page and a changed work schedule, it looks like the bargeman will be home, after all. Depending on the outdoor temp, we'll either be sawing out the last of this rounds trees, or going for a short drive down some remote hollow with a couple of fountain cokes.

Then, he's gonna be home. Latest word is he's gonna be on the Cumberland in Nashville until the 17th.

Faith, So much for that romance novel I can sympathize with you. My dad was a railroader for 40+ years and when I was a kid I could go 2&3 weeks at a time without seeing him.He would come home for 2 or 3 days and be gone again. It was much better later in his career but by then all us kids were out of the house. He did what he had to do to provide for his family, and he did it quite well. I am sure your Mike is doing the same. Snake-eyes

Azslim - Was talking to my mom the other day and she brought up something along those lines. We had career day in 2nd grade. You know the kind where the kids bring in their dads to give a talk. Well anyways, I told teacher that my daddy didn't work and was never home. Well, he didn't get in a car each morning and drive into town and he ate and read the Citizens Journal or Ohio Farmer while driving tractor instead of in an ez chair like other dads. The rest of the kids thought he must be a welfare bum. Thank heavens our family was pretty well known around Plain City. She knew dad was a farmer and spent nearly every hour either under a cow, in the fields, or at one of them farmer meetings/BS sessions.

Soon as I get a chance to get the film developed and a poster-size enlargement done, I got Mike's present. (Anyting having to do with film and enlargements has got to be a great gift for a guy! ;D ) Was down at Gallipolis yesterday morning and took a picture of his boat coming around the bend. That in itself isn't so special. But the Delta Queen was right along side the Dickhoner and Mike was on deck. He didn't see me hiding in the weeds along the bank. So it's still a suprise. This is the last year the Delta Queen sails. Last summer was the end of the Mississippi Queen. She was bought and sent to Europe. Coast Guard is finally enforcing a 40yr old reg not allowing a wooden superstructured vessel to be used for passengers. Her last run through our area will be southbound through Marietta on Oct. 6 (docked 8am - 1pm) and Point Pleasant on Oct. 7 (8am - 1pm).....although she was two hours early getting to Point Pleasant yesterday. I have the rest of the summer schedule for these landings if anyone is interested.

Well I have good news, and bad news about my Fathers Day doings. All but two of the family showed up,which meant 18. That's good! Had plenty of food and it was great. That's good! It did not rain. It gets tricky here that it's good it didn't rain but bad that we got to go outside. Don't be, we went outside and like a stupid 62 year old made the choice to play a little volleyball with the kids Well everything was great...I played for about 45 minutes and held my own. Rest of the day went great. Now that was Saturday. Now here comes the really bad part. My arthritic hips would not allow me out of bed Sunday morning Missed work Sun and Mon night. After the celebrex kicked in I was able to return to work last night. Rough night, but I made it. Hips are usually fine as long as I take my celebrex and don't try to act like a 20 year old. 15 years ago I was a bowler with a 195 average and bowled 3 nights a week. In less than a year my average dropped to 174, due to arthritis in my right hip! I have never picked up a ball since . Now what ever possessed me to play volleyball I will never know. I guess dumb shows up at all ages! snake-eyes
