Am thinking of gathering up about 45 - 50 old bricks or pavers and stacking up a little oven to bake in. Just don't have enough large heavy covered pans. Might be only 36x24x10 - just big enough to slide an open cookie sheet or a few pans back in. Only problem might be the bricks still being too hot to touch to pack home the same day. Kathy, if it would be OK with you to stack up some bricks at the fire site for an oven, would it be OK to come pick them up later on after they cool? Of course that's okay Faith. Just do me, and everyone else, a favor and let someone help load, unload and stack. I also have a few old broken pavers around here. I agree with Paws that they may cool down enough to load that night but we could also bring them to Athens for a later pick up. I don't really have any large baking pans around here but we can scavange around to see what might be here that will work. I was really sorry to hear about your visit to the ER...I know such things can be scary and usually not a whole lot of fun. Anxiety and grief can also mimic cardiac problems but please don't take any chances. I'd rather not have you drop on us and I don't want to lose you as a friend. It still looks like we're going to be blessed, or just lucky, with the weather on Saturday. High 44 F, partly cloudy, 20% chance of rain. I'm off to make a list of what I need to do to get ready over the next few days. What time are you folks thinking of coming out? Thanks for getting the announcements out Paws! Talk to you soon. kj

Was all tuckered out most of the weekend, but feel pretty good today.
I've pre-measured and combined all the dry ingredients for the breads. So far, I've got ingredients bagged for about 30 dinner rolls, 2 loaves cranberry-orange bread, 3 loaves of that Karen Sue's whole grain recipe , and 30 buttermilk biscuts. Is that enough breads or should I make more/less of one and/or add another variety?? Let me know.
Will also have a batch of pumpkin butter made up, along with a gallon of raspberry ripple (for us'ns) and the stuff for green beans & taters.
Was going to make Mike's favorite pecan pie, but am out of both southern comfort and pecans.

Mike went out and found some old bricks for the oven and even dug up some sasafrass root for tea. He even gave me a pair of his longjohn's so I won't freeze my buns off. Mama's happy now. I think about everything is gathered for this weekend. Just need to pack it Friday night. What time should we get there....to Phil's....to Eloise's.....uh wherever we're going?
The fun part will be when we get back home. Everything's gotta come out of the van Saturday night 'cause we're pulling out at 0700 Sunday for Mt. Vernon, KY.

Hi Faith, I am trying to get things ready for Saturday...I have baked 4 loaf pans of the 30 Day fruit cakes and I am bringing you and KJ a starter and directions. I am making an Oatmeal pie and it is like a pecan only using oats. I will have the Apple Butter half way cooked to put it on when we get there. I am getting ready for the stuffing...I put oysters in it and I can not cook a small amount of anything and Paws inform me there can never be too much stuffing! ha! Four Pumpkin pies, an apple and may be a French Apple and the Oatmeal as well. I fudged and bought Lite Cool Whip for the pies. I am bringing a two gallon jug of Iced Tea sweetened with Splenda. If it is only to be 38 we may have to warm it up! ha! I am bummed up from a fall at work and I am off until Tuesday...I will probably have to use a cane ...doc told me to uses crutches and I told him I had too many things to do and crutches would be in my way. Can you think of any thing else? When you are near Gallipolis/Rio Grande let me know and maybe we can have lunch? I work at Pt. Pleasant, WV. So, I will be meeting you guys at Paw's at 08:00 so I was informed...I asked if that was when he was getting up!! NOOOOOOOO! was the answer our convoy would be rolling! ;D Sharon

Sorry to hear about you being bummed up. Just do the best you can Saturday and don't be afraid to shout for help. Wow Sharon! We ought to be set for deserts as I picked up the fixin's for a cheater's pineapple upside-down cake to fix on the fire. By "cheater" I mean a pineapple cake mix. Figured that would be easier than trying to beat and fold in egg whites on site. Was going to make a persimmon pie, but think I'll just hold off and make that for Christmas. I understand that not being able to cook in small amounts thing. I had to divide my bread recipes by 8 to get down to a 3-loaf batch. Not sure how well my plans will work for trying to mix and bake on-site. Temperatures and timing will play a big factor in my success. I've pre-measured all the dry ingredients and blended them in gallon ziploc bags. Just need to add lard, water, and any eggs called for. Iced tea sounds good! Can never have enough tea. I'll also be bringing some sasafrass and dried peppermint along. Green beans & taters - Do you think 5 quarts of beans along with a couple of ham hocks, 3 lb of taters, and a big onion is going to be enough?

I hope there will be some heat tomorrow? The low tonight is to be 14-17 degrees. I do not think I can handle being out when it is so cold, as I have COPD and never have smoked, but a great deal of second hand smoke over the years. It is to get near 40 tomorrow.
Paws phoned and he is having problems with his pc server...I told him to get another one. I have frognet and I know in the beginning they were pretty bad, but I have no problems. He was off to the grocery store to get things for tomorrow and he was reading off his list.
He said, that he could only read part of your message before the pc bellied up. It was about you having to leave home early Saturday AM. He is planning for Mike to drive him home tomorrow evening. I am not sure that you knew that or not...but you do now! ha! Sharon

Hi Sharon! We can throw a bunch more wood on the fire after we're done cooking to help us keep warm. I have also put the leaf in the house dining table in the event it is too cold to be outside. Of course, if lots of folks end up coming it could be pretty close quarters but at least we will be warm. I hope you'll make yourself at home, come into the house anytime you need to get warm and/or lay down if necessary. I'm off to put up a couple of other fliers and get a couple of signs up. I'm not getting stressed out about cleaning however so don't expect much ;D ;D ;D I'm just planning to have a great time and am really excited about you all coming out. Thank you! kj I hope there will be some heat tomorrow? The low tonight is to be 14-17 degrees. KJ and Constantine! Man that was some kind of terific! I talked to Sharon and Faith today and they are both really greatful for your hospitality and all of us had a terrific time. I'm posting the menu on "What's for Supper" hopefully before this part of my internet capability craps out again. I am making some small progress in identifying the root of the problem. So far I have discovered that this site thinks I am operating through Level III Communications rather than Juno. So unless there is some kind of "strap around" problem resolution contract going on causing the problem here somebody is up to no good! Sharon tells me that her service is completely down and that their operators told her that other services in Athens are down and /or experiencing problems as well. Possible something cooincidental/innocent....; we'll see. Anywho Mike, Fith, and Sharon said they had a terrific time. and that goes for me too!

I had a great time...Thanks to Noodles & KJ for having us. It was cold, but preparing the meal over the campfire for the most...was great. Some things were prepared at home. Even though it was very cold, not many showed up, but it was one of the best celebrates I have attended. We had three trying to assemble a propane gas fryer was the side show. I believe the three (Mike. Paws and Mike) have missed out on a stand up comoedy...you guys were standing up after the Raspberry Ripple? Right! Thanks for all that transported my things to the campfire, back to the house and then to my auto. Thanks KJ for having the feast in your home which was nice and warm. Again, we all had a great time, if there were not many there!! We had just the right amount for your (Noodles & KJ home. Thanks Again! Sharon

Here, here! We had a superb time! Very educational for us women fold as well. We learned that most of mens problems are a direct result from having burrs on your nuts that interfere with your ability to screw. ;D Also around Athens, it's a real good idea to clarify what is meant when being asked if you have burners for sale. ;D Was also good to have Fred Sanford's approval on things. You know how hind sight is always 20/20.....well........ I had all the ingredients just-add-water-ready in that apple crate for buttermilk biscuits. My brain must have been choked out from smoke inhalation. We could have used that to make drop dumplings instead of using up kj's noodles. Noodles were of course good too! Oh, Phil. Yes, I did get up to courage to hold up the little gift that was sitting between us while flipping off that statey on the way through Morehead. ;D It still even had the balloon attached. Strange thing is he just smiled and waved.

Hey KJ, you going to share pictures or plan to hold them for ransome? Hi Folks! Happy Thanksgiving to all! It's a sunny day in southeast Ohio! The pond is covered with fantastic ice crystals and the solar panels are creating blessed juice for the batteries. I'm playing today, actually getting caught up with personal stuff after a week of more than full time hours on a part time salary; but if it helps our company stay afloat it's a good thing. I'll be checking the specific gravities on the batteries, letting the juice loose for an equilization process, hauling firewood, taking care of compost, the worms and planting ginseng. But first, I wanted to touch bases with you folks about the Thanksgiving Assembly and other things! Thanks for your prayers and well wishes for ole' Noodles! He's doing better. He's off the hill now feeding a neighbor's horses and dropping the spent grain from Jackie O's microbrewery at the Red Bird Ranch for the cattle. He's also stopping by the Kilvert Community Center to drop off the left overs and the food pantry items that were collected at our gathering. The Thanksgiving gathering was amazing!!! The food, the variety of dutch ovens, the characters and the comraderie. I loved getting up close to the variety of dutch ovens that were here and learning more ways to utilize them over a campfire and/or elsewhere. I think I'll be going dutch oven shopping in the near future. The food...what can I say. I tip my hat to the Ohio Camp Cooks! The comraderie...our home was truly blessed with your presence here. I hope we can do it again...maybe when it's just a tad warmer I've posted three of the photos at the Transition United States site: transitionus.ning.com/photo/photo/listForContributor?screenName=343ofmi4vwgtoI will also send them and the others to Paws since I still don't know how to post my .jpg files on this site. I apologize for my delay. I send my best wishes to everyone as I sincerely give Thanks for all that has passed, for this lovely day and for all that is to come. I'm sure that things are going to get tougher but as the SE Ohio Thanksgiving Assembly demonstrated...we're a hardy and resilient bunch. Good Luck and Be Careful! kj

Yes Juno is working. Curiously it is working much better than normal. Kind of got a feeling that ...; well, let's not cast aspursions until my paranoia clears up and I run a couple more trace programs. Those are great pics KJ. Looking forward to seeing what else you got. I sure hope that overhead you had Mike do of the table came out OK. Wow! What a table!

Glad to hear Juno is working for you again Phil. I hope I don't push it over the edge with all the photos I'm sending. I figured I would send them all to you for OCC history and let you decide which ones you want to post. Some of them are kind of blurry, etc.
Also, we found a nice pair of wool gloves here. I think they might be Faith's. Noodles can bring them to the market on Saturday or we can hang onto them until your next visit.

Yep. Those are probably my gloves. Hold on to them for now. I plan on making it over to Athens sometime in the next few weeks, but right now I'm not sure exactly when.

Which one of you sneaky little boogers filled up my five inch Dutch oven with apple butter? Thanks :0 Nice surprise. I finally got to unloading the Dodge and cleaning iron. Got the last of it finished last night. Now off to Lowes to get some shelving to put a more or less permanent fix on the iron storage problem.

Uh....I think that's the pumpkin butter you had me put in there. Not too sure how safe it would be to eat if left out in the car. BTW - Somehow a bag of nice russets was in my stuff when we unloaded.

Pumpkin butter? I must have forgotten. Anyway it will be nice and tasty. Not too worried about it being in the car cause it was plenty cold. The little pot sure smelled nice warming it up to clean and season it! Got everything reworked now and ready to put away. Going to start breaking out all my iron and getting it somewhat organized so I know where things are. Enjoy the potatoes. I haven't peeled one for myself in probably over a year now.
