Thought I'd start a thread to consolidate some topics a little. We picked up a new hunting area in Indiana, Kosciusko County. A got an e-mail giving me permission to hunt and will be talking to them before we head up next week. We plan on leaving next Thursday to arrive sometime Friday morning. That will give us time to pick up doe tags for Michigan and to check on my stands in Indiana and Michigan.

I got back Thursday night after guiding for coues deer for 8 days in the Santa Catalina Mtns east of Tucson. The camp went 6 for 8, with one of the guys missing 3 different times and the other was an 11 yr old boy that only got 1 day to hunt and the wind was blowing hard all day long. Of the successful hunters 5 bucks were in the 90+ range and the last was a fork horn. Was a good hunt, time to let the swelling go down in my knees then take out my oldest daughter and the fiance of my youngest daughter the end of the month for coues. Or as I like to call them LFED's which is short for Little F'ing Elf Deer. They live in rough, rugged, steep country where all the bushes are mean and double faced Carharts and leather gloves and long seeing glass is mandatory. Nice thing is they aren't too heavy for a long pack out, which most of them seem to be.

Not really surprised. Last time out there we flew a puddle jumper from the Holloman AB aeroclub over, four of us and the surround was beautiful. l) Had dinner up in Scottsdale at some restaurant where you entered by coming down a slide. I opted for the stairwell and let the colonel and two GS-11s look silly!

I guess what Mike and I saw last Tuesday night tells about the numbers in the local deer herd around here.
Was following an S10 on SR93 down around Pedro. We were both going about 60mph when Mike notices a deer crossing the road. The truck in front of us never slowed down a bit and hit it. guy just kept truckin', not once as much as tapping his breaks. Deer went over by a mailbox and layed down. Beauty of a 14-pt.
Also saw a few doe hit and they never even slowed up to check on their vehicle damage.

Not sure if you can get salvage tags there or not but there is a lot of good meat on car killed deer & elk. Where they got hit is really bruised but hanging the qtr and putting a lot of deep slices in the meat lets most of the blood drain out.
We had a spot by the ranch where deer got hit quite often and we butchered up many of them if we got on them while they were fresh.

Used to be able in Ohio, not sure now..In USRCT (United Soicialist Republic of Connecticut) we can still pick'em up if the cops or DEP tag'em out for you..I put 5 in the freezer last year and over the last nearly 20 years have cut up probably 150 or more closer to 200, either for myself or other folks and the food share programs...they can be messy but after the first 50-60 you get used to that ;D ;D ;D ;D
Our Firearms season opens up in two days (Wed) so I'll be out with Girly Girl trying to get her first CT Whitetail...

The weather in Michigan kept us pretty much grounded to the local area. I did manage a few does.(4) The daughter didn't even see a deer but one evening she decided to move to a different area from where I put her. I hunted the area instead and got this little guy just before dark. He netted 72 sticks of summer sausage at 2 pounds of meat per stick it is 144 pounds of meat not counting the hamburger from the trimmings. I'm sure one of you people can figure the on the hoof wieght. I'm figuring around 300 pounds.

Way to go partner. You process that buck in MI or bring him home in a cooler?

In MI. They don't do sausage and such in this area.I learned that last year when I brought 4 whole deer here from MI.
Another hunter tried to steal my buck. He claimed he shot it while it was still alive so it was his. I told him there was two solutions to the problem both of which I get the deer but there was only one where he didn't get his butt kicked. He took the non butt kicking solution.

Another pic of the deer and the three of us. She didn't learn anything Toby. She stayed at the house the next morning, claiming to be sick. I killed the 2 deer in the other picture within 10 yards of her stand that morning. ;D
