I found, what i believe to be a trivet, don't really know what one is, it has a number on the back...N 12... and its shaped like a iron , [for clothes] and it has some coll looking ornate ,flowery looking design on the inside and a ornate piece on the back of it [where the cord would be on a iron] and it has three feet. these would be the three corners of the iron what have i got a hold of ? a trivet or a iron holder?

A Cast Iron Trivet for a Cast Iron "Iron" ;D ;D ;D also called a "flat iron" manufactured by just about every one from big foundries to small, including blacksmiths....some are quite collectable...

What you got is an iron rest. Term trivet is OK too. If it has a cord notch then it is definitely for an electric model. The plan was to keep it off the board/clothes to keep from scorching them. The old electrics set flat like the sad irons rather than rest on the back like our modern irons. Sounds like you did a dandy job on those iron pans.

Your item could be either the stand for an old iron or a trivet. When I was growing up my mother collected cast iron. We had a heavy hand iron with detachable wooden handle. The iron could be heated on the stove, without the handle. Once the base of the iron was hot enough the handle would be reattached and the iron would be transfered to the stand (which was shaped like the base of the iron) at the ironing board. The clothing, that had been sprinkled with water, would then be placed on the ironing board and ironed, until finished or the iron was too cool.
In the 1960's there were lot of replica pieces of cast iron that came out and could be purchased at places like Cost Plus. These were decorative in nature and were recasts from earlier period pieces. I specifically remember the "iron" shaped trivet that my mother purchased at that time. It hung on the white wall of our kitchen with several other pieces of cast iron.

The "N12" could be the manufacturers item number or catalog reference......Other then that, I don't think it means anything else...
