On Thursday, January 22, the House Judiciary Committee will be holding hearings on two important gun bills. Here's GOA's summary of this legislation:
HB 228, A BILL RESTORING THE RIGHT OF SELF-DEFENSE. Among other things, this bill reaffirms the right of Montanans to use firearms to defend themselves or others by providing that:
(1) A law-abiding person threatened with bodily injury has no duty to flee;
(2) A person may harmlessly and defensively brandish or display a firearm;
(3) A landlord, hotel, or motel may not prohibit firearms;
(4) An employer who bans firearms has a responsibility for protecting the employees;
(5) A concealed firearm may be carried without a permit unless used to commit a criminal offense; and
(6) Deadly force may be used in some cases to effect a citizen's arrest.
HB 246, A BILL ALLOWING GUNS TO BE MADE IN THE STATE. Among other things, this bill states that:
(1) Based on the Second, Ninth, and Tenth Amendments, a firearm, accessory, or ammunition manufactured in Montana which remains in Montana and is marked "Made in Montana" is not subject to federal law or regulation; and
(2) Raw materials from other states or generic or insignificant parts from other states do not render these provisions inapplicable to what otherwise is a Montana firearm

I'm not sure what the "review" of existing legislation is all about but it makes my sphincter pucker up some. I think the move to permit concealed carry without exception is the smart way to go. Are there any Gun Smith's in Montana currently manufacturing weapons solely for Montana residents? Now, that would be a collector's piece worthy of ownership! Hey, maybe we can get Shiloh and Mars to move on out your way! ;D

If they get it passed I would guess a surge in small time gunmakers would occur such as what was in our past. Tn. needs these laws instead of the current law making "going armed" a felony.

We're pretty good with the,"no need to flee" thing and the right to carry,but I like the sound of that HB246. That'd open up a huge oportunity for custom and Mom and Pop gunsmiths.

Any news on these bills? I looked them up on the internet, but could find no final actions.
