I just found out yesterday that I have surgar don't know just what type of meds they are going to put me on just yet, but I hope it stops me from being thirsty all the time. My sugar was 414 yesterday, it was just a little high. Have been looking at the recipes here to see what to change when I eat.

Well ain't that a kick in the projectile! Biggest thing and for me the hardest Bruce is getting control of the diet. Doesn't mean you have to give up all the good stuff; just the portion size down and get the input balanced properly. It really does make a huge difference in your health and how you feel. After that the next biggie is "exercise" both weight and cardiovascular control stuff. Do NOT rely on meds alone! Keep them minimized as much as possible.

Phil, what are yah talkin about??? When I hear some of the menus you prepare,my sugar goes up 100 pts as I read it....Major Bruce, with your sugar at 414,your lucky they didnt hospitalize you......After I found out about me being a diabetic, I had a chinese meal one night ,and when I took my sugar,it was over 500+.......Did they check your triglycerides....They should be poppin also..... I played with my diet for a few weeks and found the carbs were killing me.....Pasta and potatoes got my sugar up,while I found I was kinda allergic to rice, and I love rice......You could read about some of the things I did in this forum.......I basically went low carb, even though Phil protested every day.......It worked.......I olost 60 lbs for one,my sugar dropped to about 83 - 95,my A1C dropped to a perfect 6, my triglycerides dropped from 1550 to about 250 ......In all I was able to ween myself off of oxygen, and insulin......My dietician changed her program to resemble mine.....She originally wanted me to eat about 45 carbs a meal, and I proved to her I could do better with at least half or more.....When I went to diner in a restaurant for example, I found I get that big 16 0z steak, but instead of a potatoe as a side, I had two portions of veggies....It worked for me,never went hungry or felt like I was on one of those stinkin gut wrenching diets....I have some recipes and some personal things I made, plus ideas on how to enjoy a piece of candy without feeling guilty......Good luck, but remember your in dangerous territory..........PM,or email me if you wish, I'll help you....

I'll keep ya in my prayers Major. I know what a hard time you're up against. Most aggravating thing in the world is to want something to eat and not be able to while other folks around sit and enjoy it... Be strong and stick with the diet and be damn sure to check your sugar regular. Old doctor buddy of mine likens each day above 200 as a day removed from the end of your life.

You'll be in my prayers also. I had some blood work done about a month ago to see if I was diabetic. I thought that I was, and that I could handle the news, but I was suprised at how relieved I was when I found out I was clean, for the time being. My dad is, and my granddad was, so watch that diet. My dad has a hard time keeping his blood sugar down, and he even has to wear special shoes because of this disease. Keep us updated please.

Give us an update Bruce when you find out what the doc wants you to do. I'm down to 140s now, better but still not good enough. All my other numbers are right on target. I'm at the 220 hovering mark now trying to break that and head for under 200 (pounds that is) My walks have progressed to a regular forty minutes and more than an hour for the past two days so I'm between four and five miles now. The legs are looking good.

I will know more today,it seems like I take 2 steps forward and get kicked back 15 but with all the stuff I have been drinking my civil war jacket fits really good.I am now down to 207lbs.

The average lifespan of a diabetic is fifteen years less than the national average for their sex. In my case that's 72-15 so I've been dead for three years already.

Bruce I have not fingered my pri...; err I mean pricked my finger yet today but I did walk six miles, sat down and everything rusted in place locked up! I had a boiled egg for breakfast and six little squares off a Cadburry's fruit and nut chocolate bar for lunch! (about a quarter of a bar I guess)

OK, you will love this Bruce! 4 tablespoons flour *4 tablespoons sugar *2 tablespoons cocoa 1 egg 3 tablespoons milk 3 tablespoons oil 3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional) a small splash of vanilla extract 1 large coffee mug * Instead of cocoa and sugar I substituted 6 TBSp of a low sugar/fat Hot Cocoa drink mix. Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a full minute, and tip out onto a plate if desired. EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous). And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world? Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night! I tried this today and it is terrific. Flavor is great and texture is reminiscent of the canned cakes in C rations or a bit like brown bread. No problem recognizing it as a chocolate cake though. With a little icing, chocolate fudge syrup or ice cream....(heck, why not all three?) it is good enough for company. Real winner! [/color] Thanks Sharon!

Speaking of OLKoot, this here OLkoot says, boy oh Boy Phil.....Just what I kept saying before....Granted your doing very well with your diet, and it makes me happy, but a Cadberry bar, then you say you substituted low sugar???,low fat??? products.....In the way I did it, I wouldnt have any sugar at all just a good sweetner like equal, leave the fat content, dont count the calories ,just cut back heavily on the carbs......Remember, I was the one who weened himself of oxygen and insulin........

Holy Smokes! I can't wait to try that!
Paws, do you have any idea what the sugar content is compared to a regular out of the box cake mix?
