Go get 'em Carter! Well, now there's two of us Heirloom boys tagged out in Florida. Brian's boy Chris just whacked his second gobbler on the military base where he's stationed in Pensacola. I gotta get him to teach his old man a lesson or two between now and next Spring. We got to get that man a spring turkey or die trying! He makes some of the finest turkey calls around and ain't never called in and killed a bird, lolol. Hundred are dying from his calls, he just ain't pulled the trigger on none yet. Funny old world, ain't it?

I'm gonna give it my best Toby. I may try "run and gun" tomorrow if they don't respond well first thing in the morning. Have to wait and see how the birds are acting. I will probably bring some old meat I stuck in the freezer to use as coyote bait too. They are terrible out there.

The daughter and I pretty much give up this year. Other then the 2 birds we haven't seen any or heard them. Many birds are being checked in but when someone checks in a bird that wieghs 23lbs, has a 5 inch beard and 1/4" spurs and was killed on private land there is no doubt in my mind it wasn't a wild bird. A guy checked in a bird that was 42lbs, 5" beard and 1/4" spurs. I just had to laugh at him when he swore it was a wild bird. I told him I had a flock of "wild" birds that size in my backyard every day, in a pen.

I had to explain it to my daughter. In this area game has always been scarce and almost all hunters are stuck in the hunting phase were we play the numbers game with the mentality that your not a hunter unless you kill or kill lots of game. Unlike deer, turkeys are easy to raise and for the most part cannot be definitely identified as domestic or wild so people raise their own and hunt them. I don't care about that but they check them in as wild birds which gives the DNR a false sense of the turkey populations. Of course they check them in because they think it validates the bird as "wild" and gives "proof" of their hunting(lack of mostly) skills. The only solution I can think of is to do away with checking in turkeys. Legaly, I can tag my birds for ID purposes, turn them loose on private land and "hunt" them any time I want. Like I posted, I don't care about that and if people want to do that then more power to them. What I don't like is those birds being checked in and counted as wild birds so some putz can stroke his ego!

I got one Saturday morning. It put an end to my eight year drought. I started by sitting in one spot for a while. After no action I decided to try runnin' and gunnin'. I only got about 40 yards into that plan when I saw a strutting bird about 100 yards down the trail. I made a call and they began working their way down my way. Then I thought maybe I should have crept further ahead but it was too late. I called again and they closed to within 40 yards or less but in a spot where a shot was not possible. I would make a soft call or two every now and then to no avail. Then I decided to try a soft cluck and scratching the leaves on the ground. It took a couple times of doing this to get them to commit. There were four toms altogether. The lead one was the boss. I shot him at 11 paces. His beard was a little over nine inches and spurs over half an inch. I am guessing he weighed around 22 pounds but not sure.
