I'm sorry,I dont know all the members of OCC or their backrounds. So I'll give a brief idea of the problem....If anyone can give advise, please use my email address and give me permission to use yours..............................
The facts are, my wifes cousin who is Polish American, is married to a full blooded Yaqui American native.....They are seniors approx age 65-72....Her husband has altzheimers and cant remember some things.. They were forced out of their home, and are living in an assisted living facility....There insurance will pay for 24 months, and they've been there 17 mos already....After that ,they'll be on the street.....She gets about $400 mos from SS,because she didnt work that much. He worked many years as a butcher...17 mos ago,he had a stroke. however from an old on the job injury he had to sign away his SS in order to recieve workers comp....He does get 1000 dollars a month for that earlier on the job injury...
My question is ,what kind of government assistance if any,can he and his wife be able to get as he is an American Native......According to him as far as he can remember, the Yaqui's never submitted to or signed any agreements with the United States government .......
Thanks.....Steve The Olkoot Korot

Hi Steve, If memory serves me, I seem to remember that the Yaqui's were a tribe of the Uto-Aztecan language family. The Ute Indians speak a variation of the language though they are very different languages. I believe the tribe is more or less based in Mexico, though there are quite a few Yaqui's in the US...especially in Arizona. There is a recognized tribe called the Pascua Yaqui Tribe near Tuscon. This is what Wikipedia has to say about the Yaqui people: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaqui I would have them get in touch with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and find out if they can get some assistance through that channel. While they may not have signed a formal treaty with the American Government, Yaqui's are still an indigenous tribe. Hope this helps some. -Rogue-
