NEW YORK – Nestle USA on Friday voluntarily recalled its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after a number of illnesses were reported by those who ate the dough raw.
The company said the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating reported E. coli illnesses that might be related eating the dough.
In a statement, the FDA said there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March. About 25 people have been hospitalized, but no one has died.
The FDA advised consumers to throw away any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their homes. Retailers, restauranteurs and employees at other food-service operations should also not sell or serve any of the products.
Nestle spokeswoman Roz O'Hearn said "this has been a very quickly moving situation," adding the company took action less than 24 hours after hearing of the problem.
O'Hearn said the company will "cooperate fully" with the FDA's investigation.
The recall includes refrigerated cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tubes, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough and Ultimates cookie bar dough. It extends to chocolate chip dough and other varieties, including gingerbread, sugar and peanut butter cookie dough. It does not affect any other Toll House products, including ice cream that contains Toll House raw cookie dough.
The FDA also said consumers should not try to cook the dough, even though eating cooked dough would be safe, because consumers might get bacteria on their hands and on counters and other cooking surfaces.
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.

Since when do you recall food that people get sick from eating it RAW??? It says on the gawdamned label to cook before you eat it! In the last part of the article, the FDA warns to throw it all away and not just cook it, even though eating it cooked would be okay. Why not just prepare the dough properly and get a life! Holy shit, if I eat raw chicken or pork regularly, I might get sick too. Shouldn't we recall all uncooked chicken and pork products even though their competely safe when cooked? FDA bullshit at it's worst! Nestle oughta be standing their ground and demanding that people use common sense when ingesting theuir products.

Toby, I agree with your assessment , but in the article it does say, they think....or might be related.....So under that umbrella, I guess they had too recall the product until proper proof is determined....I still wont eat pork or chicken raw, but have you seen them gourmette freaks eat duck , ostrich, and other big birds rather raw.....I still cant eat lamb medium or rare, heck the Greeks for centuries have cooked lamb well done......Then you watch Emeril cook some chops to a nice touch of pink in the middle claiming in this country we havent had a case of triccanosis (SP) in over 50+ years...........YEAH RIGHT!!

Still comes down to individual responsibilities in my mind. You know if your food is cooked or not. If it's raw and you eat it anyway; ya can't bitch if you get a belly-ache.

Speaking of foods that have raw ingredients: Love that Home-Made Ice Cream ;D. Our Vol. Fire Dept. was started when I was a Teenager and my Dad was one of the Charter Members. Big fund Raisers were at least 2-3 Ice Cream Socials per summer. Ok, I have beat dozens upon dozens of eggs that were never cooked plus ....we used and it was all donated raw cows milk by local farmers including my Dad. Well, ours was not the richest, as we had Holsteins, but it was good to get others that had Brown Swiss, Jersey and etc that had more butter fat !! There were raw eggs and raw milk and that was the best Ice Cream in the County. However, now there is only one dairy and it costs too much to buy it....Maybe, not if they would check into Snowville Dairy. It also takes so many to help make it. We used 5 gallon freezers. But, everyone had a good time....there may be two of us that have the original recipe as years went on they began to use generic flavoring and that did something to the taste....It was nothing to be sold out by 7 PM and it would begin @5 PM...They would pull in a hay wagon and different groups would play music and even square dance....My Mom..called the Square Dances. ;D Anyway, if raw ingredients would have killed....most of us would have been dead long ago....I really thing that they are sick to begin with and they need to blame it on something as Toby said!! Oh, but never themselves!!!

I've been saying for years that the human race is devolving or degrading. Medicine has may it possible that people with bad and/or poor genetics not only live but reproduce and that is why many once " no big deal" things, like eating raw eggs, have become major issues.

Genetics, or is it just hygene....Years ago, we were taught to wash behind the ears , wash after leaving the rest room etc, I think younger people today have forgotten things like that, I also think its all about ignorant illegals coming to this country where back in their 3rd world homeland there was no form of hygene and they're living back in the stone age.....

Hygiene wouldn't matter as much if the persons immune system wasn't effected or effected badly. Example, e-coli, one person reacts badly to a above normal dose and another person can handle a high dose without any ill effects. In our past the stronger person would survive and pass on the higher tolerance gene and the other would die off. With todays medicine the weaker gene not only survives but gets passed on as well. So now we have millions of people with a weak gene that would not have survived 100 years ago.Modern hygiene is a culprit in passing of these poor genetics as well. I don't consider it a "plus" that humans can now tolerate the chemicals in our food and "cleaning" agents and cannot handle the natural bacterias. War of The Worlds in reverse.
