Dad got his deer head back from the taxidermist today. He killed a 120" eight pointer last January on a hunt we shared in S. Florida. >:(He got back a nice mount of a 100" eight pointer! So, he got the taxidermist on the phone and had him come to the house tonight and after examining photos from after the hunt, the taxidermist conceded that yes, the mount was indeed not Dad's buck, BUT he insists that he doesn't have Dad's antlers and that Dad was playing a trick on him. Ooooooh, it got awfully heated! Dad told him either get me my F***king horns back or your ass is mine!!! The taxidermist is going to make a few calls and see if he can track down Dad's head. Amazing what you get for your money these days, ain't it?

The first thing that came to my mind was shrinkage. It can be quite dramatic. Pictures don't lie though and hopefully your dad gets his deer back. Yep, amazing! That's why I use the same butchers. I don't want somebody elses deer.

Yeah, my first thought when I saw it was, "it's been awhile; maybe it just shrunk." But nope. Dad's was a wide (19") typical 8pt with a broken G3 on the left side. The buck he got back was a narrow (14") spread with exceptionaly high G2's and a broken G3 on the right side. If I can post photos soon, I will.

Toby, Just wondering is this a taxidermist that your family has used in the past? There are for sure dishonest folks in all fields of endeavor. If you and your dad feel you have been cheated I would contact the state DNR with your concerns.I don't know about Fla but Ohio takes a very, very dim view when it comes to the illegal sale of any harvested wildlife.Deer, fish or fowl.Just a thought!

The taxidermist involved is a customer of the archery shop in town where Dad works pt. He offerd to do the head for a great deal in exchange that dad advertise it and push some business his way. What a cluster-f***k!!! The guy is pissed at dad for bringing this up and making him look like an idiot! Unbelievable! The mount; it actually grosses higher than dad's buck but with the deductions it lowers the score. The guy actually suggested Dad should be grateful to get a buck with a bigger rack!!!! Here's a photo of dad and his buck. It looks smaller because the camera's farther away, but in reality, it scores better than the mounted head since it's so symetrical.

Seems the taxidermist has bought into the "modern hunter" syndrome that bigger is better and a hunt is based on how big a rack is on the deer instead of time with family/friends and the hunt itself.
If a taxidermist ever told me that I should be happy with the wrong deer simply because it had a bigger rack he would be enjoying those points in a different manner.
There is possibly another hunter with the wrong deer as well.Unless he bought the rack.

Toby, It is fairly obvious the two are not the same deer but close but for the right tyne.Besides being unethical I am sure what he did was illegal.I would still get the DNR involved.IMHO

I gave him until Wednesday to track down daddy's deer head and then I'll meet him at his house with the game warden and a sherif's deputy.

I know of a game warden that you are more then welcome to and he'll make up laws for you. Only you cannot borrow him, you gotta keep him.
