This season got off to a good start! I carried Dave with me on opening morning yesterday and I called in a Boss Gobbler from his roost. I used my own Rebel Yell box Call and one of Brian's first glass calls he gave me four years ago. I called very conservatively (a few tree yelps and clucks) and the old rascal pitched out and landed forty yards away and went into strut. A minute later, I stroked thre yelps off my glass call and he broke strut and moved in to the decoys (a jake and a hen). Dave put the smackdown on him with my old Splattermaster, a Win. 1200, 12ga, 3", with super-full turkey choke, loaded with Win, 3", #4's. His first turkey! Oh sure, I'm just narcisistic enough to have to get my picture taken with it too, lol!

Get her a big gun with a big pattern and a big red dot scope! She's another year older and I'm betting a bit steadier on her aim. She'll prolly put a big old Smack on that gobbler this year!
Best of luck to both of you!

Didn't happen this morning. I got up to frost and 30 degrees so I wasn't all that enthused. At daybreak we got to watch 2 toms, 2 jakes and 15 hens work their way down to a pond just out of gun range. We watched them until 9am when they finaly walked out of sight.
We will go back this evening and hope to get to them before they head back up.

Yesterday afternoon was a bust. We got into the woods and 2 of the neighbors came walking down the mountain. They said the turkies were there but they ran them up and over the mountain. We waited anyway. Then the owner decided to plow the front edge of the woods. With people on both sides I decided to leave. Oh well.
This morning there was 20mph gusts here at the house but we headed out anyway. No wind at the hunting woods. We set up in the holler they came down the first morning. Yep, they came down the other holler that we were at the day before. Ain't no way I'll be able to draw the toms off the 20 hens they have.
The regular season opens this upcoming weekend. The daughter will cover one side and I'll cover the other.

Soon as them hens go to sitting their eggs; you'll get one coming in!
Try calling a little more aggressively and toss in some fighting purrs; you might draw one o fthem satelite gobblers out of the flock.

I am not much of a turkey hunter, but I have hunted them maybe eight times.Harvested one tom a few years ago and a nice one, at least I thought so at the time.Field weight 20+ a few ounces. Spurs close to 1 3/8",beard at just under 10". BTW that tom was taken with a smooth bore .64 cal Percussion muzzleloader at approximately 15 yards. Have not hunted turkeys for maybe 4/5 years. I do know one thing: When I hunted turkey I saw more deer, and when hunting deer I saw turkey. Its almost like the DNR sends them an e-mail Anywhoo, Ohio turkey hunting starts April 19 and runs to May 16th. According to the DNR,counties that border the Ohio River should be the most productive. Good luck to you all

I took Chicken up to Cedar Key yesterday for a turkey and came up empty. We hunted till 12:30pm and my legs gave out so we headed over to my buddy Crichton's place nearby to shoot the shit awhile. Once we got there, his sons took off after Chicken like beagles in heat. It was kinda funny to watch as she tormented them. They volunteered to take her out for a hog hunt, and she agreed and took off to the swamp and did a spot and stalk hunt. Three hours into the hunt, Crichton and I heard the rifle she was loaned go off and a half hour past that she rode in on the 4-wheeler with a nice fat sow and a grin as big as all outdoors. The boys nearly fell all over themselves helping her clean it and get it in the cooler. I was really grateful to them all for volunteering to take her on a hunt and to make her feel so special. She had such a great time!!! ;D Pictured there with Chicken are Brian (L) and Matt (R) two of Crichtons ranch guides.

Been out of the woods the rest of the week after coming down with a bad cold that's turned into pneumonia! I can't hardly breathe with this cough rattling in my chest. Ol Doc's got me on antibiotics 3x daily and told me to get lots of rest. So, no hunting this weekend either. I pray I'm feeling better for Easter!

I know she's my sister n all, but I doubt nobody named Mike's going to have her legs, lol. Anybody heard from Mars? I'm wondering if he got a gobbler for his daughter yet. I saw he was playing Farmville on FB, but I hope he's gotten time off the computer for a hunt or two.

We went out on opening day but not since.
I worked the 2 jakes for several hours and finaly had them leave the flock and headed our way. When they were about 80 yards out in the field my daughter decided to stand up and go water a nearby bush.
I may take her back out this Saturday. I saw them yesterday and there are only a couple of hens with the toms. The rest are probaly on nests so we might stand a good chance at one of the mature toms.
We saw a guy hunting the fields across the street. Camo gun and wearing a white shirt, camo pants and a white ballcap.

No luck here yet either. Had 2 jakes take apeek at our dekes opening morning, but the didn't stick around when they saw the 'Pretty Boy' standing there. Next morning had a couple of toms strutting out about 80 yds, but they wouldn't come any closer. (We didn't put pretty boy out the second day). Mike had a tom working on Wednesday, but he must have lost interest and left with no shot opportunity. Gonna give it another shot this weekend.
