Not a black walnut on any of the trees around here this year. Haven't seen any hickories either.
I was at Wally World yesterday and saw they had 8oz bags of black walnut goodies for $4.68. Bag says it's 1-1/2 cups worth. At Jackson, they were in a special holiday baking section at the back of the store. I picked up two bags just to have handy. I didn't get anymore 'cause I didn't know what local picked goodies are bringing this year. $8-12/pound is usual. I'd be interested in a 5-gallon bucket of in-shell black walnuts or hickories if somebody else wants to do the cracking for me. I got plenty of time to pick goodies. Just no patience to crack 'em.

Yes I do. I picked up a couple pans full from the trees in the yard next door. Havn't been over the hill to see what there might be. That's where the grove is.

Fred swiped us a few bags of pecans from the trees down the road. Folks moved out and he helped his self, lol.
I was in the woods today looking to put out a blind for rifle season and the fox and gray squirrels were cutting the hickory nuts. LOTS of fat live and red oak acorns on the ground, but I doubt I'll bother gathering any for acorn flour; takes too ong to keep leaching and rinsing the acid out of them.

Faith, I remember as a youngster,my dad bringing home burlap bags of black walnuts(from where,I do not know). It was my brother and my self's job to produce the food from them shells. We would sit on the back porch, for what seemed like hours, busting those shells with hammers to retrieve those nuts. Mom,would use them as quick as we shelled them,in cookies & other goodies. Boy would I like to be on that back porch today, busting walnuts with a hammer......

You could tell who the "walnut pickers" were in school from their black and green fingers!
