I thought I knew all the vets in that area. Haven't hear of him. But I know where that road is and yes there are some horses down in there. I did some checking on some of the racing forums. The farm name is Harmony Hills Farm. One guy said he picked up one of the studs (there were two studs) and a couple mares. He said all the brood mares are ready to pop foals.

Rest easy Koot!! Those horses aren't going to be slaughtered and in anybodys lunch or pet kibble. Horse slaughter is illegal in Ohio (and most of our country). They are going to the Sugarcreek stock yards though. That is where a lot of horse trading takes place, and from what I'm hearing this morning, 100% of them will be bought up either as pleasure horses for kids 4-H projects or by the Amish.
These horses are very fortunate. Just in my area, there are thousands of horses every day who area owned by SOB's that simply walk away from them and the farm. I see on Craigs List all the time folks who will swap you a horse for a truck load of hay to feed the others. Cousin works animal control in Florida and sees it down there too. What acreage the shelter has available is filled to the brim with livestock. She has personally adopted hundreds of fine barrel and cutting horses, goats and cattle and cared for them until she could find permanent homes. It makes my heart ache that I don't have 100 more acres here to take in some of them.

Something got seeming off with this story. I've seen it all over every web site I've been on in the past 24 hours. There was also something very familiar with it. So I did some checking. Seemed odd I couldn't find his obit in any of there newspapers online archives.
The story is true. It was a veterinarian that died and his son was forced to find homes for the horses. However, the horses weren't free and it happened nearly 30 years ago. I remember everybody wondering who this "vet" was since there were only two vets that covered an 8 county area. From my understanding, he was a retired veterinarian at one of the fancy central Ohio horse farms or race tracks back in the '60s and had moved to Barnesville after he retired.

Maybe back then laws were different....I once saw a good movie about horses returning from WWl.....All the Army wanted to do in moving into the modern era of trucks and cars was to machine gun the heard...A small unit of Soldiers assigned to the dastardly deed wouldn't put up with it and stole the heard bringing it to Canada where they were graciously accepted by RCMP and Canadian Army....

Koot, That was a great movie! I don't remember the name of it,but I do know Don Johnson was a main character...(probably google to find out) Actually based on a true story, the condemned WW1 horses were driven by,dedicated horse soldiers,to Canada. If you get the chance,I urge you to watch it.

If you get the chance,I urge you to watch it. Actor Ken Olin directed this real-life story of five American Calvary soldiers who took a stand against General Douglas MacArthur and fought his 1930s plan to trade men on horses for tanks. After defying a direct order to destroy their horses, the men find themselves on the wrong side of military law fighting to survive. This made-for-cable movie was filmed on location in New Zealand and Australia. ~ Bernadette McCallion, Rovi ;D ;D

Koot, Thanks for that info! "In Pursuit of Honor" and "Hildago" are two of my favorite movies about horses.Mainly because they are based on issues that really took place. I know there are many more, but I would watch these two,and have several times. ;D

The race never took place and the horse never existed.m Still a good movie though. I especially liked the Sheik's decision to castrate the interloping American. ;D
