It's berry season again.... The blackberies are plentifulthis year along the old railroad bed behind dad's and the U-pick blueberry fields are wide open right now. I noticed today also, that the elderberry crop is mighty thick down around the edge of the swamp and they'll be coming ripe real soon. Me and Fred got plans to try and fill as many five gallon buckets as we can on each type of the berries. I'm thinking I'll talk dad into making a batch of wine and mom and my sisters to build us up a cobbler or two. Makes me miss granny so much...she loved making berry cobblers, jellies, and such for us. Each one finished with love for her family and pride in her skill...I loved her so much... Anyway, you know where me and Fred will be spending our evenings for awhile. Can't let the bounty go to waste.

Boy does that bring back memories....My Grand Parents would take the entire family up to the country when I was a kid.....There used to be little bungalows that we rented and once berry season was in, the farmer would take us out to where we would spend days picking ......The great part was sitting on the tail of his pickup eating berries from the baskets we collected and then later my grand mother making all sorts of pies....YUUUUUUMMMMMM!!! ;D

Both blackberries and raspberries are absolutely loaded with blossoms. I hope to get a few gallons. But, this season I'm focusing on on the new young neighbors across the road. They have a long row to hoe and will need all the berries and wild edibles they can find if they're going to make it through the winter. There's mom & dad and 3 little ones from 2 to 9 years old. They're also going to need lots of insulation, blankets, rugs, ect. as their new house is just a plywood shell. Actually just a storage shed made to look like a cabin.

Seems to me you'll make 'em a fine mentor on foraging. Teach 'em all they'll let you. Put a cobbler in the oven for 'em and that'll damn sure get them fellers to picking berries I bet!
