Oh yeah I saw this on the show a couple years back. Hey speakin of idea. Saw today on a Montana Res they were building houses out of square bailed straw and stucco. Kick butt! Cheap, practical and very efficient on energy use, cost and ease of environment. Stack them up, stucco them, trim them out and run the systems and finish on the interior. Think I'd stick with indoor stucco and set in one of those clay fireplaces in the corner of two or three rooms. Run all my electrical in floor level soffits with my outlets along the runs raising switch wires up door trims and setting boxes behind chair rails for the whole house. Same with phones and entertainment systems. Could be really sharp. Floor level soffits make nice bases for cabinets, hutches, and closets too. Put your pipes overhead and drop in flalse walls for your wet walls.

Seen some of that in a couple of the "homesteader" style magazines. Can't beat the insulation!
I'm going to build a small pallet house first. Then I'll give that some consideration next. Goal is a small home on each corner of the property and move all the family up with a common meeting house/kitchen/dining/rec room in the center of the property.
Got room for you too if we have a country long enough to sustain us!!!

Kinda the idea with the central building. Everyone can eat and hangout and visit then go back to their own place when they want privacy.
Water's the next big thing. A cistern for each is just to much, I need a well put in, but that's a big chunk of change. Gonna be later than sooner. Won't be nothing to rig each little cabin with solar arrays.

you got good rock base or can seal with clay I might think about diggin a pond of good size at the base of your highest point and lettin' that bnitch fill with rain and snow melt. You can always haul water in for it if you need and worry about drilling a well later or a bit at a time; meanwhile you got your cistern and you might want to stock it especially if you happen to smack into a stream while digging.
