Anybody know of a fast way to tell if a wild mushroom is edible or not? I'm not good at all, at comparing photos and telling.
I've got a ton of mushrooms coming up. No morels or any like I see commercially raised in the stores, but there's a helluva lot of them. I been reading on FB about folks enjoying all sorts of wild mushrooms, but I been skeered to take a risk.
I been going by the, "If the horses don't eat them, I probably shouldn't" rule of thumb. But, horses don't eat chicken either...
I want to be safe, but if they're edible, it'd be a shame to waste them.

Sure wish I could help ya out!! We've got all kinds of fungi growing on this place too. Think I've seen about 30 types. Actually, can smell spore all over the place year round. I recall when I was a kid that you checked the gill color. But I can't remember if it's pink, white or black on the "toadstool type" that are good. Also found out that several "safe" mushrooms have poisonous imposters. I stick to morels, hen of the woods and brackets (but only those found on oaks). Kinda leery of anything that flashes a bright orange, red or yellow color. We've got dog pecker 'shrooms too. Staying away from them until I get a definitive ruling.
When in doubt, throw it out!!!

Yep, sounds like good advice. I need to find a way to ID them all. Lots and lots of them and different types.
I'm hardly at starvation stage, lol, but I like to utilize what's around. I'll keep digging and let ya know what I find out as far as ID'ing the edibles down here.
