Griz and guys, I want to buy a new cross bow for deer hunting here in Arkansas and wonder what kind to get. I have a left shoulder that is shot and can't draw my compound Jennings past the breaking point so want to go to a cross bow! Woould like to get a cocking(foot) one that shoots fast and has a scope on it. Will appreciate any suggestions and input. Thanks....Bill Gould

Bill, I shoot a Horton Yukon and have no complaints. I use the rope to cock it. If my shoulders were worse I would use the cranking device that goes on it. Of course if I was using something like that my shoulders would be so bad that I would no longer on the fire department. Got mine at Bass Pro Shop.

Bill, try coking it with the rope first to see if it will bother you or not. It is not really all that hard. I guess it all depends on severity of injury. Don't spend too much at Bass Pro ;D

I have a Horton Revolution. 150 lbs of pull but not bad to pull with the rope. I gave right around $400 for the kit right here in Bass Pro Shops. Did you know they opened one up here in Bosssier City? Right next to the river on Texas street (Hwy 80) before you go into Shreveport.

We're gonna have a Bass Pro open up across the river from Louisville this Fall. That is if they get it in gear. Man I can't wait

I stand corrected, I have a Barnett Revolution. It shoots very well too. Groups of 2- 4 inches at 45 yrds and I can hit a paper plate at 60 yards everytime. Not that I would try and take a deer at that range with it. I feel the max ranges for crossbow are about the same as a regular bow.

Well, fellas, I ended up buying a Horton Yukon Sl 150! Also bought the mechanical cocking device and a Field Logic Block Cross Bow target! Easton XX75 bolts and Muzzy 125 gr. broadheads! ;D :)Now I have to put this all together and start practicing. My site is a peep type that I'm not too thrilled about as I have never used pins to site with before..always was instinctive! Will have Rich (kokvik) help me out when we go up to his CCC to get our blinds and trails cut for bow season! Can hardly wait to give it a try. Any hints or suggestions are greatly appreciated. THANKS!......Bill

THANKS!......Bill Hi Bill. Looks like you made a good choice in your equipment. I would not worry to much about pin sights, in fact they are a bonus and once you get used to them it feels very much like instinctive shooting. I hunt with a compound-bow. At the begining I had 3 pins. One was set at 15 yards, one at 20 yards and the other at 30 yards. Over the years the pins have been reduced and I now use only one pin set dead on 25 yards. With the bow set up I use this lets me hold allmost dead on from zero to my self imposed limit of 25 yards. I also found that I hardly ever think about the pin. A deer comes within shooting range, the bow comes up and the pin settles "instinctievly" on the right spot. I am absolutly sure that the same will happen to you in only a couple of month of diligently shooting your cross bow. My advice to you is this. Set up your bow with the help of an experienced friend or an archery pro shop asistant. Then shoot the bow as often as you can. Make addjustments where they need to be made and keep shooting the bow all day long. With that I mean, if you can, it is better to shoot only four arrows, bullets or polts and treat each one as if it would be the only shot you have, then 100 half hearted. Devide practiece into 10 to 15 minute segments troughout the day and you will learn much quicker. Once you are happy with the set up quit tinkering around. To many hunters tinker around and then they wonder why they miss a deer in woods. To be comfortable and familiar with a weapon it has to become part of you an extension of your arm if you will and this cannot happen if you keep changing things around all the time. Once you are familiar with your cross bow and know its in and outs you will trust the equipment and this in turn will relax you and if that deer steps on the mark your cross bow will come up to your shoulder and the finger will squeeze the trigger without you knowing it or even thinking about it. Regards Othmar

Thanks for your input, Othmar. Its really appreciated as this is all new to me after years using a recurve and compound bow. Trying to teach and old dog new tricks isn't all that easy. :DBill
