OK you all, my season is about over with and I am going to have to live it this year by you all, so start telling me about it or your best story.
My best would be when my oldest son got his first Deer:
First year Ohio let the youth hunt all over the state, Alex was 14 and had just asked me for the first time this year to go hunting in his life.
About 7 am we had a big doe that stopped in a cow path and stood there, he was shaking very bad so I put my knee up for him to rest his .54 cal in-line on and told him to shoot. He looked at me and said "Dad will you calm down some, you are breathing to hard!" I told him to just shoot, when he did, my hart sank: Click. The cap fell off.
10 min after that (with the cap in place!) here comes one of the biggest bucks I have ever seen, it would not come out of the brush and all we could see good was the head with that big rack. As I held my breath and thought "2 more steps, let him take 2 more steps" he turned and walked away, never giving Alex a shot. Looking at me again he said " Sorry Dad, I just did not have the shot!" I told him that I could not say just how proud I was of him for not forcing the shot, most men looking at them horns would have tried and it would have been ugly."
That afternoon as WVU was whoooompen Pitt, I told Alex to get on his rock and I was going to walk the holler to him. It is only 200yds and I can see the rock all the way. Well I could hear the deer but did not see them. When the shot rang out, I set there holding my breath again, just hoping to hear that war whoop. Nothing, I asked him if he got it and he said that he missed it, my hart sank. I walked the last 75 yards to him and stopped about 20 yds from his rock, standing on a 3 ft wide blood trail and seeing the deer about 10 yds from me. I asked again if he got him "no I missed him clean!" I told him to go check and see just in case he did hit it and I would stay there and think about what to do about the blood trail I was standing on?
His face lit up like a sky rocket, and just about walked off the back side of the rock (Only 15ft up or so!) I finely got him to get down ware I was SAFELY and well, the best deer DRAG I have ever been on.
