Thanks. I'm pretty bad about stepping on toes. And with these big feet, that can HURT. Like you, I must ramble to make sense to myself. It's a lot cheaper than a shrink who's job is getting me to work out my own solutions. If I spent all my time walking on egg shells or beating around a bush trying to please others, I'd never be true to myself. ;D

[quote
How did your farmer react? I can picture in my head everything from enraged to totally understanding.[/quote]
Of course first the farmer thought I was the guy who shot his cow but then I explained it him. Yes he was mad and wanted to give that hunter the 2 x 4 treatment but then he saw the shape the guy was it with bow still wrapped around his head and thought he got what he deserved.
We agreed that I take the cow and process it for him. Three days later the farmer got the meat all wrapped and labbled back and some days later the sausages too. We became friends and I was the only hunter to hunt on his property from then on.

Stepping on toes? I can do that! Now for my thoughts on the subject.
Nah, not today and not here. ;D

As bad as it is and even when it costs human life "An accident is an accident." That's why they aren't called On purposes." Each and every one of us falls short of perfection at one time or another and I sure hope I remember not to judge my friends, fellows, and acquaintances during their time of error and I pray they aren't around to see and judge mine. We all need to remember that as long as we are flesh and bone, we will never be perfect. I'm sure Mr. Chaney feels perfectly terrible having for just a moment lost focus and injurying his friend, regardless of what the facts of the situation are. I'd bet he relives the event every hour trying to disclose the causal events to prevent recurrance. I wouldn't be shocked if he gives up hunting. When we error, we really need to refocus, forgive ourselves, ,learn from it so as not to repeat it, and move on. The rest of us who are there just in witness; we'll get our turn in the barrel! Now the poor guy who shot the cow it is obvious that he didn't even have a clue what a deer looked like. This is not an act of stupidity, but one of ignorance which is easily corrected. I remember when my wife shot her first deer. The owner of the beast was more than accomodating asking only that she return his saddle. Of course you are perfectly right Paw, we all make mistakes but what I can,t stand is if people don't want to face up to it or they have to be embarrassed into it like Dick Cheney or make all sorts of excuses and tell stories why it happened, like my buddy back then.

Well Othmar it is perfectly understandable. You see your friend and Mr Chaney had both made mistakes in the past and undoubtedly both knew what to expect. I don't think either would try to avoid responsibility or even embarrasment. It is the treatment they had both come to anticipate from their experiences they might wish to avoid if anything at all. I'm sure that everyone pretty much reacted just exactly how Mr Chaney thought they would once the word was out. The media is totally irresponsible. I heard a dozen different interpretations including one lady explaining why "bird shot" wasn't really real ammunition like one would find in a real shotgun. Like Chaney said; "I pulled the trigger!" That says it all. Explanations?? Not really needed; his enemies won't believe him and his friends don't care. I understand how he feels and he has my empathy; still ain't hunting with him though!

I agree Phil. I heard and read one account that he Cheney was using buckshot! The media blew this all out of porpotion. I agree with Othmar that he acted like he did not want to take responisibilty for his actions, but ain't that what we all do in one way or the other? We are like children in so many ways. We know when we have messed up and are afraid of getting punished. Just like a child! But whenever I see something like this and the actions of the people, I can't help but think of God's grace. Because of God's grace, even though I mess up. I am forgiven.

Yep. That's exactly right on target. Now you know why we spend an an eternity with our Lord in the afterlife. It'll take at least that long for us to grow up!

Okay already!!! I've tried to keep my nose out of this fiasco...but enough is enough! I have 5 points to make then I'm done!
#1. NOBODY WAS USING BUCKSHOT!!! It was a 28 gauge shotgun, for Pete's sake! How many buckshot do you suppose you could get into a 28 ga. shell? Not very damned many! You use BIRDSHOT to get the maximum number of projectiles airborn to score a hit. Does anyone actually bird hunt? What would happen if you did score a hit with buckshot? Ever shoot a little bird the size of your fist with a .25-.30 cal. round...there's nothing left! The freaking bird disintegrates. The left-wing media knows nothing about guns or ammo and is only interested in sensationalizing any and everything the current administration does.
#2 THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES WERE NOTIFIED!!! The media was not...and with very good reason. We've already seen the feeding frenzy by the media...if you were one of Whittington's kids, how would you feel to hear sensationalized news that your father had been shot...and with incorrect information at that? That is exactly why the Law Enforcement Authorities sat on the issue before releasing it to the media.
#3. CHENEY CAME THROUGH AND ADMITTED HIS GUILT...ACCEPTED FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS ACTIONS!!! Although I don't always agree with what Dick and George do, I admire the man for coming forward and admitting that he screwed up. I could name many politicians in the past that STILL haven't admitted any of their screw-ups...or tried to rationalize them away into a lesser thing.
#4. Put yourself in Cheney's place...God forbid...but pretend for a moment the role was reversed and the accident involved yourself and your best friend. How would you react...what would you do? Could you keep your composure? Would you panic? Would you report it to the media first?
#5. This thing has been cussed and discussed to the point of absurdity by the media and on every dadgummed forum and bulletin board in the country. I think it's time to find something else to speculate about. The facts are not going to change no matter what is said and who we badmouth...as said, the man admits his guilt and accepts the responsibility for it. That is good enough for me.
As I said, I'm done here. It is not my intent to offend anyone, but I'm a little tired of all the media's half-assed facts being presented as whole-truths and I think it is time to let it rest. Just my humble opinion. Before anyone challenges my knowing what I'm talking about, I got peppered with birdshot in a similar accident a few years ago...the distance between me and the gun was a little greater, the guy was being a careless ass...and after I got through tenderizing his head with my fists, he probably thought about two or three times before firing blindly at whatever moved. And you can bet I never went hunting with that clown again. Harrrumph! A near 300# sasquatch doesn't look a damned bit like a bunny...even when he's crouching in the sage brush.
Rogue out...

I agree with you Bill 100%...yesterday I heard that Harry had a heart attack just after the event...One "reporter" quoted a Doctor that a pellet had migrated through his capillaries and his veins to the heart and caused it what doctor would say something like that..for that matter what kind of idiot would believe it...the another one reported that they preformed open heart surgery to remove several pellets that had lodged in the lawyers heart and arteries...give me a break...back to the time of the shooting..Ol' Harry broke the rules also by dropping out of line and then advancing into the Veep's shooting zone without announcing his return...anyone out there ever study the arc created by a shot string? I have...it's about 6 to 8 feet long at 30 yards...and it's strung out into an arc caused by the swing of the gun...chances are that Harry wasn't in Dick's field of vision before he pulled the trigger..there are reports that he was hidden by the tall grass and that he was crouched down...no Harry was walking and looking at his prize when he was hit...technically he walked into the shot string...enough said...accidents do happen...this one was dumb all the way around...all parties present are guilty of one thing or another...the owner and guides for not warning Harry to stay back, Harry for taking that fateful stroll and Dick for not pulling off the shot (if he actually saw Harry) Bad Shiet happens to good people too...

First off, Cheney and the others knew that Whittington had gone to retrieve his bird. Cheney himself admits as much. The hunt should have stopped at that point until he returned but (and I can only assume) because of the admitted late hour they continued without knowing the exact location of Whittington. Cheney even stated that they left him about 100 yards behind when the next covey flushed. In truth Cheney "thought" he was 100 yards away but he was not. Cheney also admits to shooting directly west into a setting sun, not the best of things to do. It was and never is the resposibilty of one person to inform the other of their whereabouts. It is however the resposibility of the shooter to make sure his shot is safe. There are more people out in the fields and woods other then hunters and they don't know or have to follow our rules so we as hunters better know what we are doing.
