I ever tell ya'll how much I love turkey hunting?
It's almost an obsession with me.
Fishing is cast and cast and look for where they might be and cast some more. I like it a lot though.
Deer and hogs are great, because I have to read the sign and study the terrain and try to outthink them to intercept them. I like that a lot too.
But turkeys? Not only do I have to hunt them like deer and hogs, by reading the signs and the terrain, but I get to have an actual conversation with them. It goes something like this...
Me: "Yelp, yelp, yelp, yelp, yelp." ("Hey, I'm a horny hen. Anybody wanna play?")
Tom: "Gobble!" ("Dang right!")
Me: "Yelp, yelp, yelp, cut-cut-cut-cut-cut, yelp yelp yelp!" ("well come on over here big boy! I'm ready for some loving.")
Tom: "Gobble! Gobble!" (Yeah Baby! I'm on the way! should I pick up some wine, beer, or condoms?")
Me: "Cut-cut-cut, yelp, yelp, yelp, yelp!" ("No! Don't stop for anything! I want you now!")
Tom: "Gobble!!!" ("I'm getting closer, but I don't see you. Where are you baby? Daddy's home!")
Me: "Cluck, cluck." (Ooh baby, I'm over here.")
Tom: "Spit and drum... gobble... spit and drum." (Hey baby, check me out! Ain't I a handsome sumbitch?")
Me: "Cluck." (Bring it on big boy! Just come a little closer.")
Tom: "Gobble.. spit and drum." (That's right baby! You want some of this?")
Me: "Whistle!" ("Hey you!")
Tom: "Putt!" (Dude! Where'd you come from???")
Me: "Bang!" (" ;D ;D ;D")
Tom: "................................................................................................."
Killed my first of the year Wednesday and I popped it's grandaddy this morning! I love turkey hunting!

I hit the woods after work today. Had two toms gobbling a long way off (400 yards or so). While "talking" them into doing something stupid another one gobbled from about 80 yards. They busted me before I could even start to get set up. Big tom and two hens. NUTS! Ended up seeing 4 deer, 1 rabbit and 1 male grouse that kinda got mad when I tried to catch him as he strutted past me only a foot away. Kinda cool watching the "look" on his face like, "hey, I was making good with the ladies and you messed it up" as he raised his hackles then flew about 20 feet and walked off.

Gotta love it! Shame you didn't make good on that grouse grab. That'd be one to brag about! ;D

Our season is just getting good now with the weather and the moon. I REALLY have to see if Matt will let me have some of my turkey gear back that he's "borrowed" over the last few years. I hate it when he comes uop with that "stole it fair and square" bit. So far it's 2 trollingmotors, all my turkey calls, the choke for my 870, a pirouge and an old 7 1/2 horse outboard. I'm not even going to start on the lfishing gear he's got.....

That Matt's a smart feller!
What a better way to get you to come out for a hunting or fishing trip than by holding your gear hostage! ;D
Turkeys are really getting fired up now that they're in their second gobbling phase. The hens are starting to set their nests and the old boys are running around desperate to find that one last piece of tail.
It'd be a really good time to get one to do something dumb, but I'm all outta tags!
Still planning on headin' to Cadiz, KY. next week for a couple of days. I'm really looking forward to it!

Found out this morning why the other 2 toms yesterday wouldn't come in. They couldn't get the pen door open. I hate it when that happens. ( mailing them a wire cutter with a "love" note from the "sexy" hen on the mountain ;D)

Turkey opens here in not too many more days. Got to remember to get licenses, if Uncle Sam leaves me enough after taxes! (Wonder if he wants pesos this year>) Always kind of thought I'd like to retire in a foreign nation. Kind of looks like maybe I did!

Season openrd yesterday, I went right after my shift but of course it was already daylight and the birds were already on the ground. I had one come close but not close enough for a shot. I saw two hens and three deer. Maybe Wednesday morning.

Boy are you guys lucky I read that you get to go after your shift, my son and I drew turkey tags in Utah so it will be about a 280 mile drive and we will leave here on the 20th and stay there for a week. This is a good get away for this time of year but I am a little worried we woke up to snow this morning and it is now 10:10 am and it is 26 degrees. But the more I think about it thats ok because as you all know we do eat well on those huntin trips. ;D

I've never been turkey hunting before. But there is a first for everything. Coming home yesterday, there was a flock crossing from a corn field down by my folks. My best guess would be around 80 in the flock. I gave up counting after 40. I stopped the van as they were crossing the road. Talk about FAT birds!! I've raised domestic turks and I would guess the gobblers in this bunch averaged 40 lb. There were 5 or 6 that I saw with double beards which drug the ground! The hens were none too shabby either!!
I called dad when we got home and asked him if he knew about the flock. Guess they were there when I was a kid too. Just never paid much attention. He said this is the smaller group. There is another one on the south end of his farm with upwards of 250 that were verified by ODNR! I'm gonna have to go for a little walk down by the pipeline and put in a little bang-bang time......

Tell me more! Tell me more!! I'm in need of a serious tukey fix; I ain't been in the woods in five days!!!! So far I've brought in six longbeards for me and some others and I have to wait until Saturday before I get to go again. This time in Cadiz, KY. I can't wait! I have to drive, which sucks at nearly three bucks a gallon, but I can't break even flying and then having to rent a car. Why? The airline wants to charge me double fares because I have a huge ass!!!!! They'll refund the extra ticket after the flight if the flight isn't sold out, but if it's a sell out, then I eat the price of the second seat. Isn't that a crock? That's been a policy with some airlines for a while, but now ALL of them are doing it. Next thing you know they're going to charge extra for being ugly too. I'll never get to travel then!

Cadiz, KY, Toby? That's only about 7 1/2 hours from some of us! Just might have to form a posse and drag you up to Ohio with us all for a day or two or three! ;D But I don't know about getting you in to hunt that flock I saw. Brother is running the place and he can be such a big pecker-wood at times. I'm sure though we can find a few other spots just as prime. Mike says you can come here and give it a try.

My brother is a fan of using a 10 gauge to turkey hunt and has been a "little" annoying over my choice of using my 12 gauge 870 supermag. He says it only has a max range of between 20-30 yards using my 3 1/2 inch copperplated #6's. I decided to point out his error and that it's more like 50 yards. I found a Vienna sausage can and stuck it on a branch and paced off an agreed 25 yard distance. Once flattened the can was just bigger then a gobblers head. At the shot my brother asked where the can went as he didn't see what direction it flew. I told him it didn't fly anywhere, that the shot had turned it to confetti, which it had. He looks at me and says " it ain't no 10 gauge but you might get 35 yards with it".

Hate to say it but DaGriz invented the only turkey murder rig I use now. It is an 870 3 inch Hevi Shot number 6 in a Super Full Choke. It'll thread a needle at 50 yards without brushing the chrome off! Only two problems with it. IT HURTS!! If you don't aim small; you just might miss it clean!
