Lawsuit aims to stop wild turkey hunt on California island Published: 1/11/2007 1:14:10 PM LOS ANGELES (AP) - An animal rights group has sued the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy in an attempt to stop the eradication of wild turkeys on Santa Cruz Island off the Central California coast. The suit alleges the defendants have hired an Australian company called ProHunt to eradicate the turkeys in an attempt to protect the island's natural habitat. Wild turkeys were introduced to the island off Santa Barbara in 1972 by a rancher. Scientists have said the kills are necessary because turkeys provide prey for golden eagles, who also kill the island's endangered foxes. A spokeswoman for the National Park Service says no wild turkeys had been killed on federal land. She said she could not comment on the lawsuit because she has not seen it. ****************************** If the wanna get rid of them so badly, why'n hell they gonna hire a company from AUSTRALIA to kill them off rather than allow AMERICAN hunters to pay for the privelege of hunting them. Just more typical governtmental stupidity!

Here is an interesting article representing the camp on "leave the turkeys alone." www.citizenreviewonline.org/dec_2006/17/tnc.html What sparse research I was able to do would indicate that the real reason the Nature Conservancy wants them killed off is because they are aggressive and "scare" visitors! A little population control via controlled hunting seasons might make a bit more sense; however, the damned island belongs to the Nature Conservancy and the Feds sooooo....

For what it's worth, here's what I found on Santa Cruz Island and its foliage & fauna from the EPA website. Whole bunch of mambo-jumbo that would takes me months to really understand. www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-SPECIES/1995/July/Day-25/pr-338.htmlI do remember watching either a History Channel or PBS documentary a year or two ago on Santa Cruz, but can't find a link to the episode. Most of the larger wildlife on the island was brought in by the ranch family that owned the island for generations. I recall thinking, "maybe they were half-way decent cattlemen in the beginning, but the generations after them didn't know sickum about why God didn't put large game species on that rock to start with."

santa Cruz has contracted an Australian company called ProHunt to eliminate the turkeys. I want to look further into that. I got a suggestion from Geehee Hunter over at Othmar's site about incorporating a group of turkey hunters and underbidding ProHunt for the job. I'll be looking into that ASAP tomorrow and let ya'll know what I find!

You would think that the Wild Turkey Federation or any other conservation group, would volunteer their time to capture these birds for release in other areas....They certainly collect alot of donations, and dues thru the year to plan such a venture....Why kill them for no reason and in such amounts....

You'd think that in California this would be considered ethnic cleansing!

Where's all of them high dollar animal protection nuts in all of this? They raise millions and millions of dollars, why can't they spare a few for the tureys and foxes. Without the turkeys to feed the foxes andtheir number one predator, the eagles, the foxes will die off shortly after the turkeys do.
Damn Californians!

Says a lot about our goverment when instead of allowing American citizens that would PAY to hunt these birds that they PAY a foriegn nation to bring guns on U.S. soil. Wonder what would happen to a U.S. Citizen if he/she had a gun on that island?! Afraid of a turkey? ;D Yet in California mountain lions are protected! ;D LOL, the ugly turkey is more scary then the cute kitty. ;D ;D

I'm sure the guy that got bitten by the mountain lion a week ago is saying how glad he is that it wasn't a turkey that attacked him. ;D
