My son got his first deer on opening day (last Saturday) at about 11:30. It was a button buck. He shot it with a scoped .243. One shot-one kill. It dropped right where it stood. As soon as it fell I told him great shot.

Congratulate him for me, will ya! I bet he was one proud fellow! How old is your son? Did he help Dad clean it and pack it away? Did you blood him? Eat any of it yet?

He is 14. I field-dressed it for him having him watch as I explained what I was doing. I told him he will do the next one with guidance from me. He drug the deer himself down to the gate. Like I said, it was not very big. We have not eaten any yet but we will soon. I will tell him you all said congrats.

You are easier on him than I am on Lucas. I told Lucas thatI had to gut my first deer by myself and so was he, with my supervision. I didn't tell him that I was 27 at the time while he is just 9,
