I was just reading an old camping manuel from 1922 by Stanley Horner.
One thing that caught my eye was the way he'd camp cook without the pots and pans.
One method was for breakfast. He'd carry oranges, eggs, onion, and smoked pork. He'd cut the orasnge in half and drink the juice by squeezing it, then he'd pick out most of the pulp and eat that.
THEN, he'd crack an egg into the orange half, dice a bit of onion and include that with a few small chunk of the smoked ham. Salt it and stir it up together and set the orange peel onto a small bit of coals he'd rake from the fire pit. He said to rotate the peeling when the egg began to firm and let it finish cooking until it firmed up.
It sounds like an impromptu omelet. Anybody ever try that? I wonder how it'd work.
He also made sort of a desert treat by rolling a piece of dough onto the end of a green limb. Not wrapping it, but rolling it all around it, so that when it browned and you removed the bread, it was formed kind of like a test tube, into which he'd pour a bit of rehydrated fruits or honey.
Hell, I'm gonna try that!

Yepper it works just terrific! You can poach an egg in there too or shir one if you prefer. I've used orange rind, and grapefruit both. You can also bake cakes, puddings, stove top stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, etc in there. You got to compromise on the time and temperature maybe a little and make sure your pot doesnt shrink up on you before your food is hot enough! That bread on the stick thing is how used to do our camp corn bread or muffins. Just form it on the end of the stick having a stick about an inch to two inches thick to make a nice sized opening. You can make yourself a hotdog bun like that then roast your weenie and fit them together. I haven't tried that with stove top stuffing but I'll bet you could get it crusty enough that you could fill the tube with maybe a roasted bratwurst! Yummie! p.s. A very long time ago I was reading about how to remove the peel intact from an entire orange and bake a round cake in it. I'm not sure I ever did understand how to do that.
