You want to fall in with us Yanks? We'd love to have you sure-nough! ;D That event is typical of the deer South events. A thousand Rebs against a hundred Yanks...but the Yanks have to win!

Well, the 11th annual Seige of Bridgeport is in the history books. This one was not as large as the past few years' have been, but was still decent. Saturday the Rebs surprised us and assaulted our redoubt. We were not under the impression they were anywhere near until their flankers found our pickets and a small cavalry fight began. Our Major formed a large portion of the battalion and sent us out of our works to beat back the Rebs as they formed in the field in our front. We had no problem beating them back. Sunday however the Rebs had reformed and now knowing our strength assaulted us again. Aagin we went out to meet them but then a few well placed cannister shots decimated our right flank and caused enough confusion among the center that our fire was much reduced. The lines gave way and retreated back into the redoubt. The Rebs silenced our gun crews and overwhelmed the remaining infantry which was forced to retreat from the works. I however, as usual, died both days. ;D My ears are ringing though because both days I managed to "die" ahead of but fairly close to our own guns. I had 2 3" rifles firing away not 25-30 yds behind me. Oh, I forgot to mention we ate mule roast off the spit. It was gooooood! ;D

Glad you had a good time man! ;D If I can get my STG I'd like to make that next year. McConnelsville and General Morgan's annual raid through Ohio this July is promising to be a very interesting time. Seems there is one rascal, Confederate Captain, who thinks he runs the thing and has decided that the presence of mortars is no longer welcome. Appears that he took this idea to the Morgan County Reenactors Association and got their agreement. As they are one of the major hosts of the event it appears that there will be no mortars at this years event breaking a 17 year long tradition. Sad that small town politics and a single asshole is capable of disrupting and eventually destroying all by his lonesome something that has promise and holds hope for bearing forth history and tradition. I promise to lay down the gauntlet personally before this selfish bastard and see what metal he is made of! I think well that this Morgan County Reenactors Association is not of any substance and shall become a falling tower of cards when subpoenad for records regarding taxes and the history of officers. Shouldn't piss off the Corporal!

That is often the problem that kills off events. One putz often drives off enough good people that the event dies off. Bridgeport is a good event, but for 11 years now the battle has not changed which is starting to become frustrating. The owner of the property has built a earthen work wall on 1 side and a wood tower that must be used because it's there. The battle each year is the same as one side or the other must defend the wall. Last year's was super-fun for everybody because we ended up with enough troops to do a tactical in the camps and woods where the visitors really couldn't even see. We had a ball! But this year enough of both sides didnt't show that we were forced to stay in the field.
I am going to Resaca this May 20-22 though. ;D That is supposed to be a great annual event but I've never been there.
Mortors really weren't used in general field battles, but for noise effect they are good to have even if they have to be hidden from the spectators for some accuracy. Maybe the mortors can be used before the battle as a spectator event. Bridgeport has done this before and actually shot balls at a stake in the field for the spectators to watch. They also have traditionally shot anvils for spectators, but this year they didn't do any of that.

Yes sir we know. Morgan had a half dozen or so brass howitzers that he drug along with. That's the only mention of artillary used during his raid, or promenade, through Ohio. Of course the re-enactment deals with an "alleged" incident in Morgan County. BFD!! We don't care! As far as we know Mosby's Raiders/Rangers never left Virginia; yet it is acceptable to have them encamped on the Muskingum river!

It was a good time again. A might cooler than we like though - down right cold at night. We all wore our great coats from before sundown until about 9am, and had frost Sunday morning.
Again, the event went off well and the spectators seemed pleased. There weren't as many re-enactors as I have seen there this time, possibly due to the cold. You re-enactors looking for something this time of the year next year should really consider this one. We can use some more guys on the field. Incidentally, you have seen the field we use if you saw "Sweet Home Alabama" where Reese Witherspoon went onto the re-enactment field (corny as heck) to find her daddy. They filmed that part there.
