Hi all! I'm kinda new at this stuff. Does anyone know of reenactments involving the 60th VA Inf.-Co.F, 2nd WV Cavalry-Co. D, or 43rd OVI-Co.D?
My Gr-Gr-Gr Grandpa George R Oiler and his brother, John A Oiler were with the 60th VA Inf. John was taken prisoner and George reported as deserted (we believe at Gauley Bridge, near their home) and reenlisted with 2nd WV Cav., from which they were honorably discharged.
Mike's Gr-Gr Grandpap William Ira Britton was with the 43rd OVI/OVVI for the duration of the war.
Also looking for any info on the GAR posts at Coalton, Ohio and Brazil, Indiana. John was a member at Coalton. William was a member at Brazil. He was originally from St. Clairsville, OH but after the war lived in Huntsville, Ala., Davison Co.,Tenn., and later Mingo Junction & Powhatan Pt, OH.
Thanks! Faith

Are we talking about designated and numbered reenactment groups? If so, each group will have it's own schedule and registration agenda. If we are talking about events or reenactments commemorating the activities of the original numbered unit then the best approach is to keep an eye on the area where the unit was originally garrisoned or engaged in major encounters of local historical importance. Contacting the chambers of commerce or the mayor's office in the respective region is a good place to begin. Another method is to Google the unit designation and leap frog into that. This has the advantage of providing information available about both the original (genuine) unit as well as any reenactment group emulating their history. You might accidentally encounter these units at the larger reenactments. The annual reenactment in McConnelsville is the 6th largest in the US! hint hint!

In case you don't already know this, the following link is run by the Nat'l Park Serv. and is very good to locate specifics soldiers. www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/Also, you can take this info or as much as you know and get a form from the National Archives to inquire about all recorded data on your ancestors. A quick look at the Oilers in the NPS site reveals George R. Oiler in Co. F of the 60th VA Inf, but not John. John A. Oiler shows up only in the 26th Battalion VA Inf (Edgar's).

I went to the site last night. Curious though. I found a scan of John A's service record (a card) in the national archives several years ago. Just can't find that page now. It states he was with the 60th. Strange. Big bonus of unexpected information from the Parks site!! I found the boys dad, Elihu, in Co. H of Edgars. First breakthrough I've had on him in years! Also found that John & George's baby brother Miles was with them.

Sometimes the names on muster records are spelled differently than we now spell them, or were handed down the spellings generation to generation. And, often muster records only list initials and a last name. Case in point, my wife's Confederate link was Pvt. Louis Berry Holly Brown. He is listed on a muster card in the 30th TN Inf 1 time when he joined, and throughout the rest of the war that reg't lists him as awol. But, 2 mos later he appears as LBH Brown or Louis Brown alternantly in the 44th TN Inf as a teamster running through early '64 when he is listed as discharged-wounded in head. A history of that reg't actually records the injury when his mules ran loose with him and overturned his wagon. He was recorded there as being injured in the head and discharged soon after. A family history of hers mentions him as being a Confederate veteran who was "teched". This was the old commoner term for someone "a little off his rocker" so that bonk on his noggin must've rattled some marbles.
Go to the Nat'l Archives & Records Administration (NARA) and request the forms to search civil war soldiers' service histories. In a couple weeks you'll get them in the mail. THey are free so request enough for everyone you want to look up. Send them in and in 4-6 wks they'll mail you copies of everything they have, or a letter telling you they found nothing. It only costs $17 (enter CC # on form) if they find a match. If they find nothing it was free.
