Currently, a leaglize battle is shaping up over the proposed re-zoning of a 1 acre parcel along the Old Nashville Pike that is right across from the Hazen's Brigade monument, the oldest original Civil War monument at Stones River Nat'l Battlefield. A man has owned it for many years and until about a year ago lived on it in a trailer. He removed the trailer, but retained ownership. he has offered to sell but at ridiculous prices. Now, he wants it re-zoned commercial so somebody can open a business there evidently thinking a business would pay more to set up as the sole business in the center of the battlefield. Literally, it is the only private lot within the boundaries of the national battlefield. It site just beside the giant monstrosity of a overpass earthwork built a decade ago on top ot "Hell's Half Acre" and across from the Hazen's Brigade Monument. It fronts the Old Nashville Pike and is literally the "high water mark" of the Dec. 31st, 1862 Confederate charges. I am asking everyone to contact the U.S. Dept. of the Interior Secretary, Dirk Kempthorne and ask him to please work to purchase this small yet valuable parcel for the Stones River Nat'l Battlefield. You can do this at the "Contact Us" link off the DoI site at www.doi.gov/ by just addressing to him and asking for his interest in this issue.

Shiloh can you get a plat number and maybe a record book page number and owner's name for the property in question? Sounds like he wants to push the DOI into making a rediculous offer for the piece. Make sure you guys fight the rezone attempt cause he doesn't have a leg to stand on. If he had a brain he would set a fair market value on it, sell it short and file the remaining balance as a tax deductible contribution. He would also reduce the capital gains taxes he would have to pay on it. In that area a full acre would be worth between $35,000 and $50,000 dollars figuring it could probably be split into four building sites on a main thoroughfare and near a historical site. As a piece of commercial property figure it around $800.00 per linear foot of road frontage maximum.

I don't have that off hand. I only know about this from listening to rangers talk and yesterday there was an article about it in the paper. When I contacted the DoI I just said it iwas the acre parcel across from the Hazen's Brigade Monument at Stones River Nat'l Battlefield. That should get it narrowed down since it is the only privately owned property within the Battlefield's larger boundaries.
